It is rare that I don't use a snorkel on every Scuba dive and I rarely dive from shore. I see no reason to waste breathing gas on swims to the anchor line or back to the boat. People who hate snorkels have never mastered using them. Of course that would all change if dive shops figured out to sell $300 snorkels.

My snorkel is rolled up in a pocket on ocean dives, in the bag on quarry or lake dives for fun, or slid under a bungee if teaching and have to have it. Simple j tube. No purge, no dry top. Which by the way will not work for in water rescue breathing. That in itself is of little use for those who don't practice it regularly. In Wreck classes where even limited penetration is involved it better not be on someone's mask. Because sure as heck it will get tangled up in the spider webs I set up for entanglement/penetration practice.

And for the record dry snorkels should be outlawed for scuba IMO. as should any that cost more than 20 bucks.

Goes around first stage when you look up you bang your head on it...it is padded and I only use it for the benefit of it not getting tangled there as easy.

Same reason I didnt see a need for taking the snokel off the mask until that time.

BTW, this thread IS in the Hogarthian subforum, and the Hogarthian rig does not include a snorkel on the mask, in part because it can interfere with the deployment of the long hose. I don't believe William Hogarth has weighed in on where a snorkel should go if you want to have one, but in a pocket would make sense, and so would having it against the plate, where it does not impede the function of any other piece of gear.

I always have my snorkel on my mask. Even when there is no chance to use it! :)
