The Park was beautiful today, esp in the morning. Viz was 60-80ft..maybe more in some places. Current pushing towards harbor on dive #1 1130am but on # 2 had seemingly reversed and colder murkier water moved in the deeper regions. Still, quite warm and viz really blue and clear for that forest effect in the kelp. Shallow waters have a great deal of the invasive seaweed. Saw all the usual suspects and also a large stingray who seemed to have no fear of me and allowed very close video. The stingray had markings on it that made you think he had been "tagged." Looked like V I or V 1. Also encountered and filmed : large torpedo ray out by small boats in 60ft and a huge overly friendly Sheepshead (no doubt Oscar III or something) who had all his formidable teeth. Place was very thick with half-sized calicos all lined up as if waiting for something. I met some friendly divers out from Houston and one from France. Played hide and seek with octopus out by Jacques Cousteau monument..one little octopus grabbed my gloved hand and seriously tried to drag it and me into its lair. Cormorants were dive-bombing the masses of small fish. Just outside the park several sea lions were doing similar things to the deeper fish. The stairs and railings really are a big assist for older/injured people with gimpy backs and knees. This is the best time of year for Catalina in most respects.

No cardinalfish? Sorry I missed you but I was overtown buying a "new" car for mainland road trips.

Wow, lots of cool activities at the Park. This is why I like diving at the Park during the off season, less divers and swimmers means more animals activities.

Is this the overly friendly sheepshead to which you refer? He did not tell me his name, but it could have been Oscar III. The female with him at the time left a dental impression on my flash diffuser. I guess it looked like it might have been tasty floating there next to my strobe.

Did my first dives in Kelp/Catalina the day before and was great. As a 67.9 year old with gimpy knees and back the stairs were nice. We had great water on both dives.

No cardinalfish BUT I will return soon and give it one more try for season...getting very overgrown which doesn't help ...liked your dive dry article btw. Other than the no-show Cardinalfish it was one of those days...a few divers and great conditions.

Chocula...probably was the same guy IF he was extraordinarily large and not at all impressed by humans...I think they get hard-boiled eggs from visitors so anything remotely looking like that may get crunched. Seems like over the years the big alpha Sheepshead keeps changing but the new guy keeps the Oscar Monniker..last one had a missing front tooth and another one I recall had a nasty scar on tail...probably a few other iterations too. Its nice they are protected at the Park as it would be chicken S#*&t to spear such an easy target and they thrill divers too...probably keep the urchin population down. I saw some 'sleeping' in crevices during a night dive...just like Maori Wrasses.

Oscar I has a broken right upper canine tooth... but it is NOT due to the time I punched him in the mouth for biting my knuckles while I was filming something
