You hear at least one female part blurted out when he gets grabbed :O

Lets just say that I would be saying more than ONE profanity if I was diving in near zero visibility looking for a corpse and someone grabbed me

Even so, the guy must have been extremely anxious to get to the surface to breath fresh air and see daylight and I'm sure the rescue team was VERY aware of the possibility of him freaking out at any moment. As I was watching it I could just see him trying to bolt to the surface the moment he got clear of the wreck. Thankfully no, he and the rescue team did a fantastic job of keeping him calm and getting him into the bell.

My previous comment was tongue in cheek. Darn intrawebs don't do sarcasm very well.

Yeah. I was also only being partly serious. I do think he must have a far cooler head than the average person, but a panicked bolt for the surface was still clearly a real concern. You can here the rescuers doing their best to keep him calm and reassure him.

I am just awe-struck by the video and the accompanying stories...

Thanks Andy for sharing and posting it on your blog.

…I am wondering though, sounds like a lot of helium for a 30m dive

Saturation divers use HeO2 not Tri-Mix.

How do they manipulate those umbilicals in that wreck environment?

Very carefully, whether on a wreck or not. The good news is you can’t lose your way out.

i would probably crap in my drysuit when his hand came out of nowhere...

You would never wear a drysuit. Hot water heated wetsuits are used.

I recall reading an interview with the rescue diver who said he was shocked, pleasantly so, because they'd assumed it was going to just be a recovery mission.

Sort of puts a more realistic perspective on Nitrogen Narcosis and Oxygen Toxicity.

This may help explain some things: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/commercial-divers/467739-what-saturation-diving.html
