I really don't know what I'd do on (an expected) recovery if I grabbed the hand, and it grabbed me back, but I'm pretty sure my drysuit wouldn't be dry.

They transferred him into the sat divers bell. Something like 60 hours to the surface, then a few more chamber rides on the boat.

In the bell for 2.5 days...

The bell mates under pressure to living chambers on deck so crews can change out. The bell is just the elevator and decompression is in the deck chambers.

Regarding the hand coming out of the muck, read the stories regarding the divers doing the recovery of

American Airlines flight 587 that crash in Nov. 2011. They were working in similar conditions and had hands come out of the muck. ​
