Opening the housing of my Sea & Sea dx2g after a dive, the hinged latch or buckle on housing broke. Contacted Sea & Sea. Said the housing was discontinued and that no parts were available. Looks like pin could be driven out of hinged latch easily. Any thoughts on how to repair or find the latch.

1 Buy a used housing on eBay?
I have a dx1g and desire a spare housing. They do not come up often and the owners seem to think they are made of gold. I have noticed about 4 this last year. No dx2g. But the latch should be the same?

2 Depending upon the actual breakage, glue it back together. I have a used canon housing which was broken around the latch pin. So one end of the pin was not being held. I used super glue and some thin plastic with a lot of sanding and shaping but was able secure the pin end. It has now held for years with no problems.

3 make another latch. Sounds like all you need is something to keep the door closed. Can you fashion another mechanism? In my canon issue above I used duct tape for half a dive trip as all I really needed to do was make sure the latch did not pop open. How broken is your housing latch?

The latch is broke on the solid plastic between hinge and the locking part. I will try jb weld or some other type of epoxy. Have a dx 5000 as a back up if I can't repair for my next trip in feb. Thanks for the tips.

if you just try a simple butt joint glue job, then it will not likely hold. in my canon case i had to laminate some very thin plastic across the break point. my initial attempts at butt joint repair did not hold once some stress was applied by closing the latch.

looking at my dx1g, the only "important" piece of the latch is the triangular profile nub that sticks up. It engages with the housing and closes and secures the door. The red & white gubbins after that that are screwed to the latch merely secure the latch. If just the gubbins is broken off, then no sweat, duct tape would work fine.

If it is broken before the nub, then you will have a challenge to keep a simple glue repair together. there is a large amount of stress on the nub as it is part of the lever system that forces the door closed.

good luck or good ebay hunting...

yes mine is broken before the nub and realize that it will be a challenge to repair because it will have stress when closing. I would prefer to just replace the latch if possible.

good luck on the search!

one thing to consider is a dx1g housing (i am assuming they use the same latch). If you find a dx1g i would be interested in the "rest"
of the housing so we could maybe cost share if it was reasonable price point. I am in the process of adding an electrical sync port to my dx1g housing. if i botch the job then my housing will be toast, so i would like the safety net of a spare.

Contact Devon at at Pacific Housings. He specializes in repairs & refurbs. He can better advise if it can be repaired and he's got lots of parts in stock.

My DX-2G flooded diving Truk Lagoon a couple of months ago. I don't know what caused the leak, but the housing latch is still good. If you come up dry elsewhere, shoot me a PM. Now I have a whole bunch of spare DX-2G stuff laying around as I switched to a Canon/Ikelite combo.
