Hi Scuba Board,

I am going to be visiting Dallas/Fort Worth from Australia in early August for work and I have a few extra days planned to see the area. Could anyone recommend some diving companies that visit the local area? Adding a trip down to the caribbean is tempting, but not realistic unfortunately....

Thank you,

Nich.

Near Dallas there's a training site at Clear Springs. Often referred to here as CSSP. Clear Spring Scuba Park is "clearly" different I'm sure some of the local dive operators go there - I just don't know any. Maybe check with Lone Star Scuba. Find Scuba Diving Lessons, Scuba Certifications, Dive Equipment and Dive Travel at lonestarscuba.com

If you have 2-3 days, you might also see about taking the Fling out to Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary. They'll have trips booked most weekends but may either have free spots or you can find out on their calendar who has the boat your weekend and contact them about availability. It's seriously the best diving nearby. About 4-1/2 hours driving from Dallas to the port.

You might also look into the Texas Clipper wreck dive out of Padre Island. Athens scuba park is also not too far...SE of Dallas.

Why is a quick side trip to the Carib unrealistic? A nonstop flight to either Cancun or Cozumel is less than three hours from DFW, IAH, AUS and SAT.

American has it's major hub at DFW and practically has hourly flights to Cancun or Cozumel. Spirit Air has nonstop flights for about $360rt. It costs more to fly directly into Cozumel, but you save a couple hours getting from the Cancun airport to the island. (and you save time at immigration and customs in Coz)

How about a nice dive in the only diveable Atlas missile silo?

Call Family Scuba in Midland,Tx to find out when and what shops are going, then call the shop to join in.

Here are my pics. Valhalla Missile Silo Dive - Imgur

The site is called Valhalla just southwest from Abilene. I drove up from Austin and its a cool site for 2 or 3 tanks.

If you are interested, I can try to help you find out who is going since you are overseas. The great thing about this sit is it never gets blown out. There can be a tornado above and you can still dive below.

Thank you all for the replies, it all looks pretty amazing and I am wishing I had an extra few week instead of a few days..

driftwood: A side trip to carib while possible is actually quite a lot more than just my return fare, my better half is ok with me enjoying Texas without her, a trip to the carib is a step too far...

00wabbit: That looks amazing and I have just sent an email to Family Scuba to ask them about it in August. I may need to gear up and practise my steps up and down the fire escape at home if it is doable.

Tony387 & diversteve: Those both look amazing and thanks for your advice.

Thanks,

nich.

I was really worried about all the stairs since I'm not in the best shape but it was really no problem. You carry everything down in stages to a staging area. You only have to walk fully dressed Dow. The one set of stairs over the water. There are also a lot of landings in the stairs as you go up to the top.

You are a wise man. Nothing is worse than an angry better half. A lot of us consider Coz to be local diving.

While not diving, a side trip to San Antonio is time well spent.

Mammoth Lake in Clute/Lake Jackson Texas would be a good trip for you. Approximately 5 hr drive from Dallas, so you would need to spend at least one night in a hotel so you could enjoy a half or full day of diving the lake. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mammoth-Lake-Dive-Park/564277606968246
