My eyeglasses are metal frame type, and they have never rusted when I carry them with me on dives. The lenses get a bit salty if I don't rinse them off after a dive, and when I get home from a trip I do add a tiny drop of light oil to the hinges. No biggy.

Other than the tired cliches, how does this make the point that thieves like this thread? They don't read ScubaBoard.

Second, It's been repeated time and again. Follow the simple, common sense rules, and you have little chance of being a victim; and it will drive crime down. Leave your windows down, so they don't get broken. Leave your door unlocked, so if someone really wants to rummage in your dirty rental they can. And leave nothing of value.

Second, except in the case of fools who leave expensive items and think they'll be OK, the thieves do not have a economy based on re-selling dirty t-shirts and flip-flops.

what makes you think they don read scubaboard? They got lap tops they most likely stole out of some truck or condo. I wouldn't wish crime on anyone but then again, "There is an exception to everything". if enough people get vandalized on the island, maybe, just maybe something will get done about it........

I'm not saying they can't, I'm saying they don't. Why would they? I have yet to see the post from someone saying, "Wheee!!! We're going to Karpata tomorrow in our rusty white Toyota Hi-Lux with a dent in the front left quarter panel! I can't wait to take some pictures of the Ocean with my $2,000 Nikon Camera before we go diving!"

There's no reason for them to read ScubaBoard. They won't learn anything, they already know that crime exists and that people will break the rules and leave their $2,000 Nikon Camera in the rusty white Toyota Hi-Lux with a dent.

Not going to happen. Humans will be Humans.
Just as you can't solve crime (we've been trying for thousands of years), you can't fix people who will want to break the rules and bring their expensive toys with them, thinking that paradise should be crime free, or that crime won't happen to them.

Besides, it's a jerk move to wish people got vandalized so you don't have to deal with it. How'd you like it if you became that anonymous "enough people"?

Ironically, I imagine police think the same thing...that maybe, just maybe, if enough people get vandalized on the island, people will stop leaving valuables in rental trucks at shore dive sites.

Richard.

Recently returned from a week on Bonaire and just like in many years past, nothing was stolen. We always leave a full cooler in the truck and not even one beer has ever been taken. Not surprised. :)

Actually, I am. I would expect a cold beer to be stolen.

The thief could be anyone.

even another diver(s). Cold beer is hard to resist sometimes and after all, leaving it out like that is as if you are offering it. :)

Agreed, but the proper thing to do if one helps one's self to another's barley sandwiches is to leave a toonie.
