@carlito35
I think that the Mares transmitter is intended for the battery to be changed by customer (as it can't be recharged without opening the case), so I don't think this is a reason for voiding your warranty. Did you get the info on the voided warranty directly from Mares or a POS?

From the Icon HD manual:
 WARNING
We recommend having the battery of the tank module replaced by an authorized Mares dealer. The change must be made with particular care in order to prevent water from seeping in. The warranty does not cover damages due to an improper placement of the battery.

So they recommend, but do not require, replacement by a Mares dealer. Doing so yourself will not void your warranty, but they would not cover damage as a result of you changing the battery.

So are they claiming that the problem was caused by you replacing the battery?

Strangely Mares requires a Mares dealer to return an item I find that strange but nevertheless...it was my local dive shop that said taking the battery out voided the warranty I guess she confused the computer unit with the transmitter. My transmitter was fine so opening my self was no issue. And given some of the techs I see in my third world dive sites I'm much rather do it myself. Not sure why Mares would void any warranty if the buyer opens either of the units that is stupid to me also. If I mess it up by opening fine. If not so what? Computer being returned now.

I have the same issue with Oceanic. If I need a repair of any kind ( warranty or paid ), I have to take it to LDS that carries Oceanic, they send it to the Canadian distributor, who then sends it to Oceanic USA. PITA

The Mares manual actually says pretty much the same for the Icon battery as it does for the transmitter. The difference is that they give you step by step instructions and a diagram for the transmitter, but not for the Icon.

Hope they can fix your Icon, let us know how it goes.

As a Mares dealer and a Mares Lab Technician, I can tell you that the transmitter battery can be changed by the consumer. The Icon computer battery must be changed by a certified "Mares Lab" Tech. Just because you are a Mares dealer don't mean you can work on their gear. I have attended several equipment manufactures Lab Schools and I must say Mares has the best out there. Theirs is the only school that I was tested both on paper and hands on before I got a certificate. The Icon battery is not just a battery that you can buy at radio shack. It is wired in. The transmitter battery is just a battery with no wires to hook up.

No idea why you need a school or certificate to change the Icon main battery. My sons out of warranty Icon I checked the battery it is a simple matter to change it. Don't really care that its not a Radio Shack battery I don't want my dealer to charge me $35, then the cost of the battery, to take the one minute it takes to change the battery. I could order the battery and do that all by myself. Who needs the dealer to check my perfectly functioning computer? Oh and that $35 is on top of the rate they charged me to change the battery. No wonder folks hate LDS, and then manufacturers that use prioritary batteries and make you take them to the dealer to change them. Just idiotic business.

I thought the Icon battery was soldered in. Not so?

Absolutely not small white plug immediately accessible once you remove the cap. Literally one minute to replace after removing the cap. I can post pictures of the old batteries my dealer charged me $75 to replace (not including the cost of the battery).

Let me know if you are able to buy one other than from Mares. I haven't been able to find any. It sounds to me like your Local Dive Center is a little high. If you buy your computer from us we will replace the battery for just the cost of the battery. Also if I replace your battery and it leaks, I am the one that makes it good. If you do it you are on your own. We charge $40 for the battery and that includes a new O-ring, sealant and labor. We charge the same to everyone. Some dealers charge according to the customer's attitude.

Right "if I buy your computer from us" does nothing for me. Mares is chaining me to some LDS to change the battery and that sucks considering Predators, Lynx, and several others allow me to change the battery all by myself. That's my point. Had I known that I would have chosen some other brand.
