In the past, my pick up truck had a top on it so all I had to do was stabilize my tanks. My new truck does not have a topper. I will be going to the Keys in a couple of months with my gear, my tools (for a Hog class with Netdoc) and 6 100cf steel tanks. Looking for a way to secure and stabilize the tanks. Since I am traveling alone, I need to be able to leave my truck for rest stops, etc. As well, I don't want them rolling around.

Open to suggestions. I am pretty handy with wood and metal tools.

thanx

Stand them up on the front of the bed and use a strap to secure them from the forward tie down? Takes 2 minutes. If you have time, take off the valves, place steel rings on the necks and then you can use a bike cable or chain to secure them from theft.

[QUOTE If you have time, take off the valves, place steel rings on the necks and then you can use a bike cable or chain to secure them from theft.[/QUOTE] Thanx, just don't want to lose the gas in the tanks. Thought about the rings and will probably do that after I use them.

Put a trap over them then. They are heavy and cumbersome and I would not be worried about theft at a rest stop. You could also buy a length of chain, take two wraps around each valve and then lock it down at the ends. Nobody is going to bother with that.

I travel with up to 18 tanks in the back. I lay them down and stack in layers. I put a 25mm ratchet strap around them and they do not move (put the strap on the floor before the first layer  ). I have done just 6 it one layer, once strapped together they don't move. I don't think there are many who would know or get value stealing scuba tanks, but some light chain around the valves will slow them down.

I've always wanted a way to lock my tanks in the back of my truck. What size rings do you use? Do you get them at a hardware store, or order them online? I have a couple tanks that are about to go in for hydro, and this would be a good time to add them.

I used 2" brass or stainless rings. They are about $1 each from Dive Gear Express.
I'm sure you could find similar at a hardware store.
