Gulf of Mexico question

This last week I was out several miles on a fishing charter in the GoM. From what I could tell the water was pretty clear. Heading in, a few miles away from Port Aransas, TX the water turned greenish brown. I'm wondering if anyone knows why the sudden change?

My guess would be it's got something to do with the fact you're nearing the coast and the mud and all is more stirred up there due to the rivers meeting the gulf as well as all the ship channels.

People around here never even knew that the Gulf was clear after you passed the coastal area.

The distance to the "blue water" will change with the season. In august, that clear water will come all the way into shore a bit further south, like Corpus. Earlier in the year you may have to go 10 to 20 miles out to find it.
