This is a tough question. The scuba agencies have created all kinds of programs. SSI has:
Snorkeler
Freediver
Indoor Diver (for people who just maintain zoo-quality aquariums)
Junior Scuba Diver (under 15)
Scuba Diver
Junior Open Water Diver (Under 15)
Open Water Diver (This is considered the usual starting point. Pass OW and you are "qualified")
Advanced Adventurer
EAN Diver
Junior Specialty Diver (under 15, any individual specialty)
Specialty Diver (any individual specialty)
Stress and Rescue Diver
Junior Advanced Open Water Diver (under 15)
Advance Open Water Diver
Master Diver
Silver/Gold/Platnum/Platnum Pro 5000 Diver
Dive Guide
Dive Master
Dive Control Specialist
Training Specialist
Associate Instructor (Passed the IT, waiting to be "certified".)
Open Water Instructor
EAN Instructor
Specialty Instructor
Advanced Open Water Instructor
Dive Master Instuctor
Dive Control Specialist Instructor (That's Me!)
Master Instructor
Instructor Trainer
Instructor Certifier
-Whew!! That's a lot of certification levels. This is from SSI. I'd be curious what the "full" list is from the other agencies.

Yeah I think I'd eventually want to be a dive instructor but I really want to get rescue stuff as well.

Ok Jessie for this discussion I'll talk MINIMUMS.-I wont go into opinions. To go from zero dived experience to Instructor with Padiyou need.
1)open water cert
2)advanced Open water cert.
3) A proper Emergency First responder certification.(required beyond advanced)
4)padi rescue diver cert
5)divemaster -there are a minimum number of dives you MUST have completed to start the course 60 dives
6)instructor.
There are then other specialities that will help you gain employment.
Nitrox,captain,photography ,wreck,deep etc.

I think everyone thinks I assume I'll have my instructor tomorrow lol. I understand that it'll be a long time and that I should have way more experience before I go that far haha

Nope --you asked the question and got answers

That's because we often see requests like: "I started taking my OW courses last week, and I'd like to have a job teaching cave diving by Christmas. What's the easiest way to do that?" or "I think I'd like to be a Dive Master ('cause I like the sound of 'Master'), go live on a beach in an exotic locale, and train rich tourists to dive when I feel like it. Can you offer any suggestions?".

Yeah, and I'd like a pony...

The term for people who want to do the instant trainer thing (or any beginner to expert level) is 'zero to hero', with all of the negative connotations that that implies.

We're all glad to see that you're not interested in that. ;-)

Welcome the board, and to a fantastic hobby.
