I was thinking more of the 60+% of the US budget spent on social welfare programs and illegal aliens, rather than the 20% spent on the defense which of course is job number one.

I don't know where you're getting you numbers from 60+% for Social welfare/Illegals.
The defence budget is 54% of the GDP for 2015
I suppose you could be right as a % of total spend , the USA spends way more then it earns, it won't last forever at some point the world will drop the USD and the USA will see some serious inflation and interest rate rises.

It is unlikely that A) the German sailors were aware of mass exterminations of either Jews or anyone else. B) they had any real choice in supporting the war. The Nazi gov't was short on man power for the war effort and by 1944 when most of these boys were conscripted, the war was pretty clearly a lost cause. We were trying to kill them, no big surprise on that either. However, the politics of the dead is moot. That they fought bravely and died for there country is cause enough for respect. The U-boot service had a 75% casualty rate, the highest of any service in any military during WWII and they remained a cohesive force until the very end. Why this particular boat failed to observe the surrender will never be known, but they were part of a very disciplined and effective fighting force. They deserve a level of respect.

US Marines killed on Tarawa atoll in WWII battle finally repatriated thanks to Mark Noah of History Flight - CBS News

Take a look at how we expect our war dead to be treated. Germany lost over seven million people in the war, more than thirteen times the casualties of the US. At the end of the war They did not have the resources to repatriate every body. But, they did express a desire that the bodies be left alone.

IMO they should have thought of all that before they started the war. The time to be concerned about your people is before war.

All it would have taken was one German bullet or shell and I wouldn't be here today because my father would never have been my father because he would have been killed. Don't think I don't think of that when I think of WWII. The Japanese caused us to send our men to the South Pacific if not for them our guys would have stayed home. There's no tears in this family for any German or Japanese combatants from WWII.

I got my info from the IRS in the back of a 1040 tax book. There were 2 pie charts one intake the other output.

The GDP is much smaller than the budget the info you have was presented in such a manner as to bias the perception. Figures lie and lairs figure. That's not directed at you but the authors of your info.

Since 1965 we have spent over 26 trillion dollars on the Great Society / War on poverty, more than the amount spent on all the wars we have been in since 1776. We were at 14% poverty then and we still are now. Money well spent? Or money down a well?

Using that logic we should be done with war, right? Because we spend so much on it?

Or are we equally incompetent at both?

Nice thought to be done which war. Just how is that done living in this world governed by the use of deadly force? The fact is we spend a lot more on social welfare programs with no progress.

I think you should all just join me and go for a dive at Fort Wetherill in Rhode Island this coming Sunday. I'll be there, care to join me?
Life's too short for politics, let's have fun while we can!

This thread would had had stopped couple of pages earlier if certain "action" was not mentioned.
Penetrate a war grave will always provoke certain sentiment. I had dived with British on HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse but never met any Japanese divers in Truk.

They seem to be busy taking jubilant group photos at the Arizona memorial.

We all remember the victory rather than defeat.
You won't see the French celebrate in Waterloo.

... the eastern night sky brightly illuminated by burning tankers was a fairly common sight in 1942 and 1943.

Those waters were far and away the most important battlefield on the planet. Our refinery output and war materiel shipments kept our Allies off of their knees.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war. Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea or in the air depended ultimately on its outcome.
