PST Tank ?

Until you post a photo, I refuse to believe there is a + rating stamped on the tank. Either you are mistaken or this is a troll posting. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

I'm guessing you want to see the hydro marking to make trouble for them (the hydro shop) with the DOT. It does have a "+" right next to the listed test pressure "TP5250". I will contact them Monday and review how it was tested. I'm hopeful it was just an error stamping the tank

The plot thickens. That is not where a "plus rating" symbol should be located. Perhaps it would be best if you stuck a piece of tape over the facility ID marking and provide pictures.

The "+" is after the date so it says "8 hydro shop mark 15 +" normal hydro stamp. The stamp is right above the original hydro mark which is right next to the test pressure and fill pressure. Sorry for the confusion on location. When I get home to the tank I'll cover the shop mark and get a photo.

It seems obvious to me that the hydro facility made a mistake with this tank. Either with stamping of testing it as a LP tank. Either one seems minor and correctable at this point. I have no need to cause them any problems if they correct the issue to my satisfaction. I do know that if the correct procedures for testing PST tanks is not folllowed they will fail. Can someone point me to te correct procedures so I can bring them if the tank needs a retest.

There's no "special test" for a + rating. So, there shouldn't be any worries there. But, OTOH, one jerkoff thought he was supposed to test it at 5/3 of the 10% overfill pressure (actually, he tested at 4166 psi, when it should have been 3750 psi). Haven't been back to him since, and the cylinder didn't pass the plus rating at the next test. The world is chock full of incompetents.

You can fill in all of the marking if you want to. It's your cylinder. Just fill in and camouflage the "+". You'll be fine. The hydrocheck police won't get you. The only thing that matters to the filler is what he does see, not what he doesn't. He's not going to wonder "is there a '+' under the thick paint of the first letter of his last name right after the hydro stamp?". After all, there's not supposed to be one, and even if there could be, he wouldn't care in the least if it didn't get a "+" stamp. Just don't change the marking to be something different. Then you could be liable. The "+" is invalid anyway, and covering over the marking, giving you a lower fill pressure, should not get you in any hot water, even amongst the strictest hydrocheck police.

I really doubt that was the point of the post. I think kwinter, like others of us, was a bit surprised that such a mistake would have been made.

I would agree, it is correctable, and taking it back has nothing to do with causing them problems. You are doing the hydro facility a favor by bringing this to their attention - they need to know this happened for QA purposes, to take steps to avoid it happening again. You also need to have it corrected for your own benefit. If you take it in for a fill, a competent shop will see the problem, and may decline to fill it (suspecting a bogus hydro stamp).
