Right, so we are switching now....

I have read some of your threads and I'm very impressed with your language skills. Please keep them up and, especially, that frame of mind about inmersing oneself into the culture of that language.

When I first moved to Rio it took me forever to get the knack of Portuguese, that is until I stopped trying to translate into any other language. I am still most grateful to all the 'porteros' and my friends at the market for putting up with me and teaching me the real language.

Out of the Romance languages, Portuguese is the most musical and the one that has the most specific words for each instance and usage.

Since you like A Garota de Ipanema, have you ever heard Bahia?

Até a próxima vez, mantenha-o acima.

what is your favourite word?

disequilibrium

your favourite charcter in a book?

Amber, from Forever Amber . What can I say, I'm a wench.

How many steps make up the Spanish Steps in Rome?

Europe challenged. Plan to change all that some day.

what do you love most about the place you live?

That it is a very safe place to live, very low crime area. And, that I have a mechanic that I trust. :11:

Wow Foo, a mechanic one can trust is one of the highest commodities out there. How far are you from Houston? My mechanic left several years ago and I have not been able to find anyone who can fill his shoes :(

well, i think one learns most useful Portuguese at a Futebol match!!! :lol2: I am trying to learn using the Carioca accent, beacuse I think it sounds better than the Paulista one. its more fun. To me its like The difference between a british accent and a Jamaican one- which would you prefer?!?!

Have you been to Bahia? OK, so rio might have the glitz and glamour (hahah and as favelas- Cidade De Deus :-O )but bahia definately has better Caipirinhas and a MUCH better Carnaval!

haha, agreed on the Futebol bit!!! the Carioca accent is the nicest one IMHO, I find it to be the most musical. Don't know betwen brit and jamaican (I'm a brit).. Ya mon :)

I was really lucky to travel extensively in Brasil, so yes... I have been to Bahia. Don't know about the Carnaval, I was always in Rio and only watched the Bahia one in documentaries. As for Caipis, I don't have a preference.

Have a nice wkend.
