Villa Aldora is very nice but like every other lodging, is not for everyone. Unless it has changed, you need to be diving with Aldora (a very good choice). They have less expensive rooms to suites that are like being home.

Another inexpensive place close to town is Hacienda San Miguel. The rooms have small kitchens. When I stay there, I usually cook breakfast. I have seen good rates using cheaptickets.com and look for the almost ever present discount code.

I went to Coz for the first time in 2011... With only about 13 "certified" dives under my belt. I dove Roatan first and then Hawaii... I was a little concerned about diving the "currents" of Coz so I wanted a few different kinds of diving first. With that being said... I LOVE Coz!! from my first dive to my most recent (won't say my "last" dive).

I'm sure you will hear some groans from some of the other posters, but I stay and dive with Scuba Club Cozumel. It is a Semi AI with a couple different options for food. My wife and I went with the "Lite" option which provides breakfast and lunch, and then we would venture into town (5 minute walk) to try some of the local cuisine... SCC's setup works absolutely perfect for me.... Wake up, eat, get on the boat, relax for 30-40 minutes as the boat heads south, Dive, SI, Dive, relax, and eat again... And then venture to town to eat dinner.

The boats are big and not fast, but the reef is still there once you arrive. It's a great diving platform and a pretty smooth ride ( no sea sickness). The hotel is nothing fancy, but it has all the basics that I can imagine I would ever need.... and has a great shore diving area for night dives or "checkout your weighting and gear" dive. There is also a pool (that no one ever uses) so your wife would have it all to herself.

Usually 2 DMS on the boat (8 divers per DM) and although you would think "cattle boat" it is NOT... Most of my dives I didn't see any other divers except the ones in my group.

Just my 2 cents and another option for you.

Welcome to the Cozaholic club!! It hooks everyone.. :)

Why would anyone look down on you for staying at Scuba Club? Folks have their favorites but I don't know anyone who disses SCC.

Coz is not difficult nor dangerous diving generally, but the currents can be intimidating to first timers - more so to newbies. A private DM for the first 2-dive boat trip is a good idea for those. My first trip was with a newbie, and I couldn't understand why she didn't love it at first leap - but she didn't, until we got her a private DM.

I am sure his / her concern was being labeled as "that's the best place to dive supporter" for Scuba Club, and nothing more..
