Out of interest, what are your reasons for going the opposite of most agency/instructor teachings with your long and short reg hoses?

Not trolling, genuinely interested in hearing thinking behind a different option.

My apologies... as viewed, not worn. I wasn't clear.

DHBoner, Jill Heinerth's configuration had the hose go though the loop of a large bolt snap (means removing the second stage, thread the hose through, reattach the second stage. Hose now runs brought the closed ring of the boltsnap).

If I'm picturing this right... It's not a break/cut-away?

Surprising...

This bothers me. What's the reasoning behind it? This makes you use a reversible second stage on your short hose, no?

Amended.... was in 'instructor mode' describing as seen, not worn. Apologies for lack of clarity

I saw I cool idea the boltsnap on the long hose is actually attached with bungie loop (Im using the diverite bungie keepers) around the mouthpiece easy pull off if needed and can be reatached if needed later.

Isn't that gonna leave the bolt-snap dangling down your chin? Slightly annoying perhaps?

Either way, the bolt-snap needs to be on a break-away attachment to the long-hose. There's always a risk that the bolt-snap could jam when attached to the D-ring; leaving it unavailable for immediate donation, unless it's break-away. Cut-away (i.e. cave knot) is too slow for gas donation purposes.... and this is a critical difference between backmount (where the long-hose isn't routinely clipped off) and sidemount.

My short-hose is also available for donation if required. I put it on a longer hose (32-36") into the turret of the 1st stage. During the dive the turret routes it under my armpit, then up and around my neck. That takes out the slack. It's secured in a rubber necklace....easier to detach than a bungee one (I hated these for backmount, but works great for sidemount if you get the right size.. i.e. short). To donate; pull the reg out of the bungee, swivel the turret forwards... you then have sufficient for an open-water ascent. As an instructor, this gives me options, but I've encountered no down-sides to it. It's much better with a rubber hose, as they mold to shape, whereas nylon never do...

Thanks for the pictures, I guess. But how do I know which is worn on the diver's left and which on the diver's right? Should I assume the tank on the left ends up on the diver's left? Are the tanks in the last picture scrambled?

LPI routes from the 5th/end port on the left (as worn) cylinder. Long hose is retained in bungees on the right (as worn) cylinder.

The last picture shows 2 sets of sidemount, plus 2 deco tanks (L-R: Deco, Left, Right, Left, Right, Deco)

Thanks. That's the way I wear mine, except I use a left-feed 2nd stage (in a necklace) on the left side, no hoses behind my neck. 90-deg swivels on both 2nd stages.

For me... there's issues with overhead and tech/deco protocols. Routing around the neck (hog looping) can prevent confusion when you have multiple stage/deco cylinders beyond just the 2 primaries. That's how I teach also, as students may progress into tech/overhead so I provide a method that grows with them; and doesn't abandon them if/when they get into X, Y or Z type of diving at a later stage.

I use 70-degree swivels on both regulators. Again, I never favored these with backmount; unnecessary and failure points, but they really do allow very snug hose routing with sidemount. Don't know why I feel it makes a significant difference, but it does (to me). I swap out the swivels routinely, as they aren't particularly long-lasting.

This is how I configure my long hose reg, works really well. See How-to Secure a sidemount 2nd stage breakaway clip | Divebritain Portal for a guide to set it up. It's very simple yet very effective and allows for running OOG drills with your long hose reg clipped off and easily re-stowing after the drill, unlike the more standard boltsnap and O ring idea that requires a replacement every time!

The only argument I have heard against "2 five foot hoses" is that without a hog loop or bungee the regulator can get yanked out of your mouth in a wreck or cave....discuss :)

That problem can happen with any hose not stowed well, but I have used two 5' hoses without a problem.

My configuration is the same way, both hoses are long 7' retained on the cylinders, with 70 degree swivel routed around the neck and 2nd stage right post, left side in a necklace, right is retained
by bungie loop attached at the harness, both are easy donation and no issues with multiple deco stages
