Cave Ccr Student Dies At Blue Grotto Today

A male Cave CCR student died in Blue Grotto today during a 'black out' drill. The unresponsive diver was found floating while the instructor was still at depth.

The usual information blackout seems to be in place. The instructor was female and Swiss, but I don't know her name. I don't know the name of the deceased. I don't even know what rebreather he was on. There's some bit of speculation that I've been given, but I'm not allowed to divulge it.

What the hell? How do you lose track of a student?

I've never been in the cavern part of blue grotto, so is there a 'surface' there or was this in the OW area outside the cavern?

No idea how one could lose track of a student outside the cavern there. It would prove pretty difficult in the cavern if the instructor's eyes remain open. It's incredible but tough to really assess with any more than a .5% degree of certainty since we have no idea what happened. This is very sad no matter what it is.

There are a few "I'm over here" posts on FB by a few instructors. It's like damage control. They don't want anyone to think it's their student.

That sucks! I'd rather wait for credible info (no offense) before jumping to conclusions and condemning the instructor. What little we know definately raises questions.

First rule of Scuba applies: Don't hold your breath. They don't want us to know about these kinds of accidents so the information gets squashed. We're prevented from making the same mistakes over and over again.

Why do you think you're entitled to know everything about an accident within just a few hours of it happening? Do you lack the decency to think that the families of those involved should have some time to be informed, get over the shock, and begin to grieve?

Several of us just watched a train wreck of speculation on FB because a small group of people made gross determinations without having anything more substantial than hearsay and rumor.
