I have been coming to the island a few times a year for the past 15 years, The price has always been pretty much the same all those years. From NYC it's been a low of $450 to a high of $550. I am on the island right now and paid $455 this trip. At Carnival it was closer to $550. I am careful when I book and can be very flexible with dates to try and get the best deal.

Southwest is fixing to become a major player in the market when their new Intl terminal opens in Houston and Sun Country goes in and out as a charter. So Delta, AA, United, SW and Sun Country.......more choices than the old days!

I saw a sale the other day 275 from DC to Cozumel, I'm shocked you guys have to pay so much from DFW and IAH.

There are extremely cheap deals to Mexico City nowadays, but I'm sure that is way too far to back track to make 2 tickets worth it. I guess you just have to watch and see what you can find. I fly to Asia a lot, not to Mexico or Latin America at all, and it's routinely down to $600 or $700 nowadays if you're careful, I feel like Cozumel should be lower. Bummer.

I live in northeast Indiana. We are just over 2 hours from Detroit airport, about 3 hours to Indy, and a bit over 3 to Chicago, so we have plenty of choices to search for airfare. After looking at the airfare calendar using the ITA Matrix flight search, basically any date from July through August out of Indy is $372. Detroit's cheapest is around $800 and Chicago's cheapest is $722. Indy isn't real competitive to some other destinations but is consistently much cheaper to Cozumel, plus it always is uncrowded compared to the others. We just booked for the middle of July.

Wow, welcome to the black art of revenue management. I pulled up July and August and you have a consistent spread of cheap fares from several carriers out of Indy. When you consider all the taxes, security and international fees included in those fares the remaining cost is probably below the regional segment to and from the gateway city to CZM.

Very good find. Matrix is quite powerful, although now that Google owns it the Google flights site is also very good. Your analysis is also pretty surprising to me. Domestically Chicago has great fare wars. I've seen dozens of deals to NYC, LA, MIA for $80 - 100 RT always emailing my friends there about how jealous I am. (A few days ago it was $65 RT). CZM is throwing off all my perceptions. :)

From major hub airport Atlanta to Cozumel, fares are routinely around $700 and up, whether nonstop (Delta) or connecting through Miami (AA) or Houston (UA). Anything under $700 at any time of the year is a "deal" for us. This is why we typically fly into Cancun rather than Coz. I guess there's more competition for Cancun than Coz.

Now, if I lived a couple of hours drive away in, say, Birmingham, AL, and used their nice little airport, fares to Coz, could be around $200 less.

That's the thing I don't understand is that every time we've connected in Atlanta, makes no sense how they price tickets. This time we fly into Houston.

It's got to be a great deal for me to endure O'hare.

Actually CZM or CUN?

When they first started flights to CUN I was able to get some great deals connecting through BWI that made going in and out of CUN worth it. Now the prices have risen so much that I can get a Delta flight connecting at ATL that has shorter travel time, goes in and out of CZM, and is noticeably cheaper.

CZM would be nice, and I think more competition (and possibly more non-cruise visitors that stay for a while) is a good thing, but until I see fares I'm not necessarily going to assume that Southwest is going to be cheaper.

Matrix is quite powerful, although now that Google owns it

That's been since 2010, and operationally for 5 years after the DOJ approved the buyout. Don't get me wrong - these are great tools. It's just that Matrix has been Google for quite a while.

I couldn't agree more. A really good deal. I've never actually departed from ORD anywhere near on-time, going back nearly 40 years.

Maverick, I'm in MIA and would love to receive one of those emails when the RT drops to $80-100. I promise I won't rub it in. :)
