If you fly Delta get this...

Earn 30,000 Bonus Miles : Delta Air Lines

First checked bag free for you and 3 others flying with you, delta points and sign up bonuses. This one is 30,000 but I have seen 50,000. And fee waived for first year.

Can someone remind me which rental companies on Bonaire accept AmEx?

Another couple of things I noticed:

" Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist, or Disability are also not included." So with that said would I still need to purchase some additional insurance for this coverage against an uninsured motorist?

"Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance1 is not available on all American Express® Cards. Please call 1-800-338-1670 to verify eligibility. "

Also I don't fly any particular airline so that's not going to help me much but I appreciate all input.

Dave

Are there countries that his is not accepted? If not I'll be getting another amex. I had the blue card but got rid of it as it offered me nothing.

Dave

  • Coverage is worldwide, except for vehicles rented in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand

This is all pretty standard info, redundant in fact to an old thread on SB or maybe BonaireTalk. The problem is, I don't rent the truck, it comes with the room (Buddy Dive), and I don't even pay Buddy Dive, I pay a travel broker. So I pay the inflated local "CDW Plus" to Buddy Dive and hope for the best.

All the previous threads on this have said that Telerin is the only rental company on Bonaire that accepts Amex. Of course, things can change, and this may no longer be true. I have used "Poppy's" company several times. Only had an issue with them once.

Thanks Lorenzoid. We have used Poppy before and was satisfied but also had a bit of an "issue" the last time. The rental was a day late so they sent one of their personal cars. We didn't feel comfortable using it to dive. Then the rental was wrecked on the way to us and after we returned home we got an email wanting to know why we didn't report a wreck. I reminded her it was wrecked before we got it. Poppy appologized but so far she has not responded to by latest inquiry.

Caribe did take AE but looks like they stopped. Just hoping there might be other options. Not AE but they were recommended by another SB'er so getting a quote from Avis now.

For what it's worth, our issue was that one night one of the fairly bald tires on our truck went flat, and we found ourselves unprepared to deal with it in the darkness, with tools that were rusty and difficult to deal with. We called Poppy, and she promptly sent someone out to help us. When the service guy arrived he moved our truck a few yards farther off to the side of the road from where we had stopped. He, too, decided it was too difficult to fix the flat, and brought us a replacement truck. So far, all good. But after we arrived home we received an email from Poppy accusing us of having driven the truck on the flat tire and damaging the rim (when it was in fact the service guy who drove the truck) and threatening to charge us for an entire new rim. It took some email exchanges before she finally agreed it was not our fault. Not cool to sound so accusatory, but in the end all was well. We have since rented from her a couple more times, with no issues. In fact, she gives a discount to repeat customers.

Another car rental option that accepts Amex would be welcome, though.

So when you show up at Buddy Dive your keys are waiting for you and all you do is get in and drive, park it in the parking lot at the end of the vacation and get on your plane and go home? If that's the case that's way different then anything I've experienced there. With an all inclusive dive package including the rental truck I've still had to go to the desk and fill and or sign out paperwork, pick up the keys, sign the rental truck agreement, in other words I'm still having contact with the rental of the vehicle, the paperwork, insurance, signatures etc...

No, I did not say that. There is still a contract, walk-around-to-look-for-dents, etc. But there is no payment that I can use my AMEX card for. The payment is part of the room cost, which is handled through the travel broker. I could, I suppose, use my AMEX card to pay for the "CDW Plus", but that kind of misses the point.
