would the mods actually ever consider moving this, or is this 9 pages just bored divers writing on a wall?

Put your vote where your post is...or something like that.

No ever talks about the requirements for solo vs tech. You can be a complete noob with only OW 25 dives and nitrox and take Adv Nitrox, deco and extended Range and still not meet the prerequisite 100 dives for Solo. Solo also requires AOW. May not be technical but has higher requirements. Just a thought.

I voted No. Then thought about it and realised that there is probably a need for two Solo Diver sections, one for AOW and one for Tech divers. The risks are vastly different.

Did you know that you don't need a driver's license to learn to fly a plane? But you DO need to have one before you can get licensed to drive a motorcycle.
Just a thought.

Interesting point alluded to in recent posts; while solo diving is often presumed to be solo recreational diving within the intended scope of the SDI Solo course (or PADI Self-reliant, I presume), there's a considerable range of diving outside those restrictions that some people do solo (e.g.: cave diving solo).

Is the issue here that the forum is only for solo recreational diving, or is the issue that the forum really is for all solo diving, in which case putting it in a recreational section might not make sense.

Richard.

Nonetheless the only real solo certification says Advanced Diver and Solo and is not part of their related organization's technical courses though as has been pointed out certainly the skills are transferrable.

Not arguing, my opinion, a split up buddy group is not solo diving, it is simply a failed buddy system, accidental and an accident waiting to happen and is of no relation to intentional solo diving. I think the "buddy search" can probably be implicated in some lost buddy accidents as a precipitating cause of the final demise.

If I am diving with a buddy then I am buddy diving. If not I am solo and anybody in my vicintiy, sure I would help them if I can but I am not there to help them and may not be equipped to do so, I may not be paying them any mind, I may be focused on my lens. If you are buddy diving with me best make sure it is a mutual agreement, I would like to know .

I would disagree. When you loose your buddy you are no longer buddy diving,,, you are solo. Rec divers upon loosing their buddy do a quick search and go to the surface as to not continue in a solo (non buddy supported) dive. When you reunite with your now solo buddy at the surface, you can commence the remainder of the buddy dive. Agencies don not exactly word it that way, but their proceedures reflect it.

Richard makes a valid point why "solo" diving might logically be broken into 2 discussions, recreational and technical solo diving.

I can only speak for SDI Solo Diver, though I would imagine the PADI equivalent is the same. SDI does not include overhead environments, decompression, or diving beyond recreational limits. The prerequisites of AOW and 100 dives are within recreational training and experience.

Solo diving beyond these limits could be considered techincal solo diving

So by that definition everyone has the potential to be a Solo Diver at some point? Then why have a special forum for Solo Divers at all? I think I would agree with @Nemrod that the definition (in my opinion) of "Solo Diving" involves an element of intent, and losing one's buddy doesn't fit that definition.

I support solo diving staying in the technical section.

Even though solo diving can be done with a single tank set up and in shallow reefs, it still requires a "technical" mindset. More attention to detail, a strong self reliance, and adequate skill level.

It is closer to cavern/intro level cave, than advanced buoyancy and night diver, and deserves that respect. Solo diving shouldn't be seen in the same light as the other "advanced' specialties.

And even if I don't see solo diving as technical, I don't see a good enough reason to move it from its current location. Those that are interested in solo diving will find the forum on their own.
