Anyone have experience with Highland/ XS cambands?

Why are you wanting to undo the clip? Major PITA to get them done back up, at least to me. I was very happy when I switched to a Halcyon BP/W that didn't have the accursed Highland cambands you've got. They were always wanting to come undone.
Just slide it off the top man. Don't undo them.

The reviews I've read suggest that you have to loosen the webbing to get the ring over the hook. That kind of defeats the purpose of having the ability to quickly and easily remove a tank.
If you want to stick with them (can't return them) and want them to do what you want, then I've also read you can cut off some of the hook. I believe that is the issue. There's simply too much material on the hook to get it over and free the ring.

also keep in mind that you are dealing with dry [new/] webbing.

I went from regular cam bands to those Highland ones. I HATED the Highland ones. Then I went to the ScubaPro-style quick release straps and love them. In contrast to the Highland ones, the SP-style are easy to completely undo. And I did not like the way the strap tail worked with the Highland ones. It's long and could pull loose from the Velcro and then possibly pull the buckle open. Again, in contrast, the SP-style ones have the strap tail on the inside. So, there is no chance of the tail getting loose and floating around to catch on anything.
Bonus: the SP-style straps are less expensive, too. $20 each.
DGX Tank Strap, Quick Release with S/S Hinge Buckle
I put a loop of cave line through my back plate and tied it the right length so I can put it over a tank valve and let my rig hang at just the right height while I then fasten the buckles. It's much faster for me to swap tanks with that setup than it ever was with regular cam bands or with the Highland straps.
With any of them, it is definitely helpful to wet the straps before putting them on. If they have been previously wet and are now dry, then when they get wet again they really loosen up noticeably. It's enough that if you put them on dry and they are just snug (versus super tight), when they get wet they can loosen up enough to let the tank move.
I hated those Highland straps so bad I literally posted them here in the Classifieds for free and gave them away. I even paid the postage myself.
