CCR incident in Dive4Life

Monday afternoon, a dive instructor (50) and a boy (15) were injured when a CCR caused an oxygen fire. The boy was taken with minor injuries to a hospital for children, the elder man was rushed to a specialized hospital for burn injuries.

The accident happened in Dive4Life, an indoor dive center located in Siegburg, Germany. Initially an explosion was reported, but the suspicion is now that impurities or incorrect grease have caused the oxygen to ignite.

Dive4Life did an excellent job in handling the emergency. When the fire rescue services arrived, all guest were already evacuated from the building. The fire rescue services cleared all smoke from the building and tonight the dive center is open again.

O2 fires are scary as hell. At least they didn't have a cylinder breach as well as a fire.

Scary. I have to admit first thing I noticed was " CCR Incident". It really has nothing to do with CCR. Just sayin.

yes...but...

The EU has MUCH more stringent rules regarding oxygen use in scuba. Even strict adherence to oxygen procedures is not a guarantee you won't have a issue. The MOST disciplined and professional use of oxygen in diving I have ever seen is also a location that has had two oxygen fires..and they have spent a fortune for the oxygen service procedures down to a positive pressure room for service of oxygen regs/valves and are the most aware of possible.

No, this picture was posted on the website of the fire department. It's still unclear if the tank ruptured or not, some new articles state so, the fire chief suspects grease being the culprit for the fire and didn't mention an exploded tank.

Speculation: if the tank did rupture, the damage seen in the pictures is very minimal compared to accidents where tanks did rupture. But that's my opinion.
