The week (actually 9 days) I did Truk was by far the best diving week of my life, and one of the best period.

I went in late January, and there were certainly no swells to speak of and the water was still extremely warm.

We spent 2 days at the Blue Lagoon (perfectly nice, but certainly no five star resort - if you aren't diving, you are bored rigid), and then 7 days on the Truk Odyssey (words fail me trying to describe how good that was - I appreciate it was up on a reef not so very long ago in a storm, but that would absolutely be my first choice if I was going back).

I didn't do a bolt-on trip, but most of the people who I met there did - Palau was the favourite destination, but I can't speak much one way or the other.

Here is a link to my old trip report and photos if you are interested.

I'm curious, has anyone done any CCR diving with Blue Lagoon outside of Pete's organized trips? Their website seems to heavily imply they are fully capable of supporting it. Truk Lagoon: Blue Lagoon Dive Shop Services - Chuuk Micronesia

I have an Odyssey trip booked Jan 2018 and am heavily considering adding on a week or so land based to hit the deeper and more technical sites that Odyssey doesn't usually hit like the Oite and Aikoku Maru.

I have one more question. I realized that if my husband doesn't go with me, I could do a liveaboard in Truk. Which one would you recommend?

First time in Chuuk was on Truk Odyssey 2004, and again in 2007 for a back-to-back week itinerary. For a first trip & dive as a Nitrox Recreational Diver (minimum), the best way to see all the popular wrecks, and get an optional very brief look at the deeper San Francisco Maru in a week's itinerary is aboard the Truk Odyssey. Best time to go is before the prevailing winter season NE winds & swell/chop --up to late Fall before November. Still tropical climate, but can be a cold wind chill, rainy, boat slamming & jarring ride out & back from the wrecks during the winter. And this is why the Truk Odyssey is the best most comfortable liveaboard in the Winter Season: the vessel is usually moored to a line anchored right next to the wreck of interest for that particular day, sparing the cold, wet and rough skiff ride from a land based dive ops or other Liveaboards such as the Thorfinn. . .

From 2010 to 2015, Truk Stop Dive Ops used to do separate "a la carte" tech dives on Aikoku Maru & other deep wrecks of the Fourth Fleet Anchorage, or the Oite Destroyer, with pick-up from the Odyssey during the week of your liveaboard stay on a day of your choice. Depending on their present policy, and the qualifications of the current Dive-Ops Manager (on CCR or doubles OC) or their Dive Guides (on doubles OC), they may be able to guide you on penetrations of the crew spaces, cargo holds and engine rooms of these deeper wrecks.

I'd strongly back the Odyssey over the Thorfinn. Never been on the Thorfinn (although I have seen it), but the Odyssey is by far the most comfortable liveaboard I have ever done.

My husband just told me that after a couple days he can adjust to the liveaboard. He used to run trips on them from Mendocino down to San Diego, so if he can handle that weather he can do Truk. Now to see if he'll go with the cost to join me.

I just did 17 days at Blue Lagoon16 days of Diving, the guides guided us through all the wrecks, I did the Oite not much bottom time on air so we didn't penetrate. As far as getting bored when not diving when it's 84 in Chuuk and 34 at home all it took was some shade a beer, music and or a book to keep me entertained. In the eve most of the people at resort met at Sunset Bar and talked about our Dives, I made many new friends on the trip. It definitely was the best diving I've ever done.

I misstated one thing I said Guides I had the same guide the whole time, what I meant by guides all the Divers I talked to there guide did the same as mine. You won't go wrong by staying at the Blue Lagoon
