rotuerner ...we did do inside gear checks and rigging in a heated room and look up all the standards you want ..... also it was an sdi course .... PS I run a safe course so don't judge unless you were there .....steve

Well that escalated quickly.... :/

I don't recall judging anything. Just asking the question out loud if it is permitted when it's that cold because I vaguely remembered reading something about that in the PADI standards. I, of course, am not an SDI instructor and I recognise that SDI will have different standards.

As a matter of fact, I did look up what PADI said about it because I got curious. This is what I found:

Diving in conditions where the air temperature approaches -18° C/0° F/ or lower creates a much higher incidence of equipment malfunction, immediate icing of divers and gear upon surfacing, increased risk of hypothermia and frostbite, and generally uncomfortable conditions on the surface. Therefore, whenever possible, limit ice diving to air temperatures of -12° C/10° F/ or higher, and to wind chill conditions less than -4° C/25° F.

That is a recommendation, not a standard, as I'm sure you know, but that little blurb was the reason I asked the question even though I couldn't clearly remember what it said.

Aside from that I was just conveying a couple of complications I remembered from my own ice training in -15C. I don't imagine there's any harm in that.

I think his last message was about my course.
Fear not we have a heated shack. We Canadian know how to deal in the cold

Anyway 2 days until splash time

Seconding what was just said by Steve. The attention to details and safety was at the top of Steve's list. Absolutely nothing was side stepped. All gear was assembled and tested in a warm area. Only the active divers and the safety diver had gear out on the site. Switch overs in the teams was after thorough debriefing and prep/check of the next group. All in the heated area.

BTW - the heated area was less than 50 yards from the hole. Great location!!!

sorry I jumped on you but when some suggests even slightly I am not teaching to standards I jump over it hard . all is ok .................steve

cool we had that 3 years ago .......have fun and be safe ...ps take tons of pics !!!!!!!

Ice dice was amazing!
It took us 3.5 hours do to the hole the ice was so tick. In the end it was a great awesome experience. I will definitely do it again next winter.

Since I was a student, I was not allowed to take my GoPro under the water and my instructor wanted me to focus on my skills and rope signals. So no photos unfortunately. Also the viz was only 5' for some reasons.

The coolest moment was the "ski" ride back.
We went upside down feet on the ice and signaled for a emergency pull back to the hole. You just stand there and "ski" back to the hole.

Certainly was a lot of fun. Next year as a non student, I'm bringing my hockey stick and a puck.
