Makes sense if there is a big enough market locally...otherwise, get enough stuff to do it for yourself. Expensive investment...but worth the savings in asspain. Can't stand relying on local shops to to anything.
Even a co-op with friends and acquaintances would make a big impact.

True, assuming you can trust any of them.

Agree x 1000.

Relied on a local dive shop for fills. It didn't work out over the long term. Relied on them for boat charters. It didn't work out over the long term. Way too much asspain. Bought a compressor and boat and magically - no more asspain. Totally worth it.

I broke even in 2 years filling for myself + whoever my regular buddy was at the time. $6,000 initial investment for compressor + nitrox + trimix + deco gas fills.

My breathing gas and boat diving costs are literally 1/3rd - 1/10th of what the local dive shop charges. That's allowed us to increase the frequency of our technical dives (which you need a boat for) and between the savings on both; I imagine I'll be able to purchase a rebreather in the next 2-3 years.

At that point I forsee us being spooled up enough on deeper dives that we're hitting the 40-50 trimix dives per year where a CCR would start to make sense.

Seems like associating with reprobates is something we have in common!
You just have to acknowledge that 99.8% of divers are scumbags. Once you do that, you'll stop being surprised.

My breakeven calculations are somewhere in the 3-4 year range.

OC Price Breakdown:
1 Set of Doubles w/ Nitrox = $30
1 Set of Doubles w/ Air = $15
O2 Fill = $20 (about .50 a cuft) and even a top off would have me throwing the shop $10 to support the LDS

So an average day on boat costs $80 for gas for normal tech-reational dives

CCR
Sorb = $140 per 100 lb = $1.4 per lb
Each Canister fill of 6lbs = $8.40 --but can be used for 2 maybe 3 dives so lets say ~$4.20 per dive
CCR Air Costs-$10 -- kinda just throwing this out there, hard to truly gauge because CCR divers will fill up large sets of doubles with O2 and Dil and essentially have their own fill station.

Do average CCR none helium tech dive is $15 vs $40 that it would cost OC for $25 savings per none helium tech dive.

A CCR dive is equal in cost to an air dive on OC doubles.

Trimix Dives
Prices for these can vary widely depending on location, but some rough numbers
Helium = $1.25 a cuft + "Nitrox Fill ($30)
Deco Gas on Trimix Dive = $20 for O2 and $20 for 50%

It depends on mix and size of the doubles but lets just say the average OC Trimix Dive is $150 plus $40 for deco gases

CCR trimix dive is $4.20 for sorb plus gas costs--Lets just average it out to $40 all in.

So cost savings on Trimix Dives is $150 per dive.

Lets say
40 normal tech dives a year = $25 x 40 = $1000 in savings
20 Trimix tech dives = $150 x 20 = $3000

Plus any none tech dives cost the same OC vs CCR.

You should edit that to 99.8% of people in general are scumbags..::eek:r at least willing to compromise morality to serve their own interests

Guys, the break even costs seem to be no where consistent for any two people. The style of diving right down to the penny differences in cost add up over thousands of anything whether it be dollars or dives.

It does dishearten me some to hear about such bad lds as I operate one.

I went back through my posts and I couldn't find where I said it was difficult to calculate.

But for something so easy no one has done it yet
I think CCR divers are scared to do the calc, they know its expensive but not willing to acknowledge that fact....

Plus reg maintenance, tank Viz and hydros. costs You might do some of this yourself but still impute the cost to OC
Regs maintenance, tank viz & hydro's is also required for CCR diving.....
