I was on a first date on Sunday that was going well enough until, in the course of conversation, the lovely woman across from me said, "Do you scuba dive at all?"

The realization that we were both scuba divers took the chemistry to a new level (even more so when we discovered we were fellow shark fanatics) and by the end of the night we had already agreed on a second date for this Friday.

I think things would have led to a second date regardless, but our mutual connection to scuba diving definitely excited both of us and it was a strong point of connection.

Anyhow, because of that I was just curious if anybody had scuba romance stories they would care to share? Maybe you met your spouse on a liveaboard, or you're dating your former Open Water instructor, or something else!

Marineland of the Pacific closed its doors in 1987. The public access to the shore was still open but very few people seemed to know that. For years I was the only diver there. In 2006 a new group, DiveVets began diving Marineland on Sundays. A new diver, Merry Passage joined their club and made her first Marineland dive while I was there. I was too shy to talk to her but my friend Jeff push me toward her, telling me to just go over and say hello. Merry was interested in marine life, something the rest of her group didn't seem to care about. She was showing them photos in two binders she had printed for identification purposes. I asked to see the binders and was surprised to find half of the photos were mine. Here I was afraid to talk to her and she thought of me as a local celebrity.

We dived together the following weekend and have been together for eleven years now. We've made more than 900 dives together since.

Awww...so sweet.

I met my wife at work a few years ago. Before I decided to see her again I asked if she would even try scuba . she said yea and now she is a wife. Too many times relationships in the process of compromise takes away the things we like to do. She kinda of had the choice of take the long hose or hit the road. She took the hose and never looked back. And as long as you are wondering I agreed accept a short wife and to play farkle. Sarcastically speaking we play farkle on our SI time. Bottom line is you cant have a competitor spouse when you need a companion, with that you cant have a passion and be made to feel guilty for having it. Motorcycle diving or anything Too many casualties of battle become casualties of war. Too many of them and your both loose.

There is a joke in here somewhere.

Bottom line is you cant have a competitor spouse when you need a companion,

Very true.

I discovered diving late in our marriage. It has replaced fishing. Both got me out of her hair on a regular basis, kept me content, and kept me going. She does not dive but buys me equipment some times and encourages my hobby. Last weekend we happily celebrated Number 50.

Sigh... I've had way too many dates end because she said she was afraid of the water or sharks.

Had to look up farkle. Might make a good AOW test. Try to play farkle and keep score in your head at 120 ft on air.

I met a girl online whose profile pic clearly indicated she was a diver. It was great for a while--we took a few dive trips together--but our mutual love for scuba wasn't enough to make it in the long run.

A few years later I met a girl who did not dive but said she had always wanted to. She followed through with it. We have been married and diving together for quite a few years now.
