Seems like prices are double from even 2 years ago. We used to get prices changing from 400-800 as we watched. Now nothing but $800 plus to CZM from Detroit.
How long does he bag drag take?

Not sure where in Michigan you are, but flights out of Indy are consistently around $450. They don't have the greatest prices to some other locations, but Coz seems to always be about 1/2 the price compared to Chicago or Detroit.

Cheapest flights I am seeing to CZM out of DFW are $741. That is searching for a 7 day trip, leaving any day of the week from October -April. I had just enough miles to get to CZM for my next trip but am doing the bag drag home.

When airfare from LAX to Cozumel did not come down, we are flying into Cancun nonstop saving close to $300 each.
Bag drag going from Cancun to Cozumel is ok. We used our miles to fly back from Cozumel-Houston-LAX.

Over the years I have repeatedly told my friends, "if you can get a direct flight into Cancun, as opposed to a stop over and plane change anywhere, you are better off".. First off, there is no chance of Ice Storms in Cancun nor missed connections in Houston or Dallas. The feared Bag drag in not REALLY and in almost all cases it will get you to Cozumel faster than any plane change scenario, with little risk.

Whether you pick Atlanta, DFW, or Houston for a change of planes you are always going to have risks of ice storms, thunder storms, etc. I know from lots of personal experience. Indeed for many years while my mother in law was ailing, my then wife and kids live in SoCal. I can't tell you the number of times I was screwed by aircraft change in Houston. IF it wasn't the weather it was Immigration or airline stupidity. All the while Alaska Airlines had non stop from LAX to Cancun. I learned my lesson.

Again, a non stop flight into Cancun is always less risky than a plane change to Cozumel, plus you will likely save some cash. Now my kids live near Houston and even then I often fly into Cancun rather than Cozumel.

Heading home to DFW on Tuesday flying standby the flights were packed out of Cancun due to Houston shutting down, hopped on the 7AM to LAX and then the afternoon flight to DFW. Didn't know AA had a direct to the west coast flight out of Cancun but there were a surprising number of seats available. I believe the new ATA between the The United States of Mexico and the United States of America was fully ratified and in place as of last December, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a number of new flights that will spring up going into the high season.

Dave is absolutely right. Coming from Chicago, I would much rather go direct to CUN and do the bag drag than connect in DFW. Too much can go wrong on the connection either way.

The bag drag is always preferable to a plane change in the US unless you can save a ton of money—usually not.

Trust me,

Not for me, coming from Austin. Only once have I had a near miss with my connecting flight in IAH, and that was due to a thunderstorm here and the fact that I had only allowed for a 40 minute layover. Now I take the hour earlier flight out of Austin and it's never been a problem. I very much prefer to deal with a plane change in Houston over the bag drag. YMMV and DSFDF.

I agree with Dave. The 'Bag drag' is just not as painful as a layover. And there's ALWAYS a layover when you're coming from Seattle.... I can get non-stop to Cancun and for $40 hire a driver to handle my bags and get me on the ferry. Yes, the bus is MUCH cheaper, but I'm on vacation, I still have a bag full of gear, and I'm lazy. I've done the bus more than a few times and it's very easy and comfortable. I usually sleep the whole way.

The problem isn't just getting TO COZ. Our flight home was delayed by thunderstorms, and we got into MIA late, missed the connection, and the next flight wasn't until the morning. AA said "we don't reimburse for weather", and gave us voucher so the hotel room cost "only" $100 and a lot of stress. Next time I'll consider a bag drag.
