Memorial plaque at Shaw's Cove

Wondering if anyone has seen the plaque in about 50' of water and about 50 yards off of Turnaround Rock at the edge of the reef? I didn't have a camera but next time I will. Interested in the back story if anyone knows.

I have not seen it or was unaware of its existence until now. Is it attached permanently to a rock or just secured by it shear weight ?

Must be a memorial plaque for Shannon (?) who possibly passed away at age 42 ?

Yes sir I agree. It looks exactly like what you would see in a cemetery, about 10”x16”. I didn’t touch it so I assume the weight of itself is holding it down. Polished granite with maybe a brass plate with the writing on it.

Thanks for your efforts Sam! We all owe our forbears a debt of gratitude. I dove Shaw's Cove last Wednesday while I was down in the OC on overnight business. Bit of a swell and pretty surgy, but the visibility was excellent and I had a great Octopus encounter.

Hmmm. There's still a strange, unique requirement there to dive with a snorkel. Is that a vestige of your efforts?

While the snorkel law is still on the books the city's Dive Safety Officer said it will no longer be enforced. I used to duct tape a snorkel to the back of my tank when I would dive Laguna Beach. The law only specified that you had to have one in possession.

I dive there frequently snorkel no where in site....so far so good

There are plenty on the sand in about 20 feet of water if you need an extra. I know I've left a couple there.

Yes it is ..
In one of the final negations with the protagonist we developed a descriptions of a

Surfer - one who may or may not be wearing fins

Skin diver (aka Snorkeler, free diver ) will be equipped with fins mask and snorkel aka FM&S

Lung diver (the name used during that era to describe a SCUBA diver of today)
Will be equipped with a FM&S a tank & regulator and a personal flotation device (PFD) at that time a surface float

, With the degredation and shorting dive classes. the lack of waterman ship skills of current divers combined with the excessive reliance on equipment rather than waterman ship skills evidently certain restriction's have been relaxed to accommodate the modern tube sucker.

However please bear in mind there is a city ordinance addressing in water activities which could be enforced by Laguna Beach officials.
