Securing knife and shears

I had that pouch and shears. People here told me not to worry, that my shears would be secure.

About 10 dives later, somewhere in Hawaii, my trauma shears were gone.

Now, I use these pouches on all my rigs.

What a simple genius idea.

I don't carry shears, but use small serrated knives on my gear. They all have bungee attached. This is not so much because of the design of the sheath but for when you use the knife and don't secure it properly

I generally have to idiot proof things to protect myself from myself!

I have a similar pouch from Voodoo Tactical. They work great and are perfect with my Dive Rite Bellows pocket because the pocket has MOLLE webbing so I'm not losing anymore real estate on my harness.

I use mine a lot for lionfish so because they are constantly being deployed I added a coil lanyard to my shears and knife.

The drawback of the Zeagle arrangement is that the shears can't be replaced with generic shears because the strap is sewn onto the shears. The product Stuart posted a link to, where the strap is part of the pouch, makes a lot more sense.

And you can get 2 x Ti-coated shears from DGX and 2 x MSM pouches for the cost of one of those Zeagle setups....

As an aside, the Ti-coated shears that I bought after I lost my first pair are now about 2 1/2 years old and they do have some corrosion on them, but the rivet is still holding and they are still working just fine. For $7, maybe I should go ahead and retire them, break them apart, and see how the rivet looks on the inside, to get an idea of how long I should use future pairs before preemptively retiring them. It would suck to get into a spot where I NEED them and have the rivet break just then. Trauma shears are the only cutting device I carry that is really good for one-handed use. I.e. a knife or Eezycut generally (not always) needs you to use your other hand to hold the thing you're trying to cut.

Speaking of shears, I have a friend who gave me some EMT shears out of one of his ambulance supply boxes. He gave me a stainless steel pair and an all aluminum pair. I think I will start carrying all three pair (the two he gave me and my titanium coated pair) to see which hold up the best. The only problem is that the aluminum pair has hot pink handles. I guess I'll have to get some matching gear that I saw in another thread so I can be color coordinated:

Yeah, I have had those for a few years, and when I bought shears for my wife a little while back I got the DGX instead. As far as I can tell, all shears rust, whether "stainless" or Ti-coated. I'm tempted to get the MSM pouch and the cheapest shears I can buy in bulk, and just swap in a new pair whenever I feel like it.

THAT is probably the best idea yet. The cost of shears make them a "consumable". As I see it, the only problem with aluminum shears is that they won't cut steel whereas the stainless and titanium (haven't tested yet) will cut. I have seen the stainless cut a penny in half. As I said, the cost makes them consumable.
