Anyone flying from TPA -> CZM directly? Preferably on American. Trying to get an idea of what a reasonable price for tickets is.

I'm currently seeing $680 but I'm bad with flight shopping. Any tips on getting a better deal? I don't see direct flights either.

Yeah I don't think there are any direct flights. Last time I went, I had a layover in Miami. Some of our group from Tampa had to go to Texas for the layover, and others to NC. It was 2015, but back then I bought the tickets in mid march and paid 613.90 after taxes and fees and everything on American. From what I was told back then, I paid more than a lot of folks did.

I ended up going with American. TPA - MIA - CZM.

I have been checking every day since last Monday when I posted. Prices were steady all week until today. Today the prices came down by $100 a person.

Thanks for the input, guys!

I'm far from an expert shopper. Do check multiple sites and clear all your cookies between checks. I checked every day this week on cheapoair.com, expedia.com and americanairlines.com Prices were all comparable all week. Today, the prices on expedia.com came down by $100/person and the prices on cheapoair came down by only $50. I bought the tickets on expedia.

I have read on various sites about "how to get good prices on airline tickets" that Sunday is a bad day to buy, but that's the only consistent advice I've seen between sites. I decided to just shop around every day until I found something that looked better than what I'd seen previous days.

As JohnN mentioned you can save a LOT by flying to Cancun and then taking a bus and water taxi over to Cozumel. Personally I don't like the extra stress of doing that and I am not comfortable with the security situation on mainland Mexico . A friend of mine flew through Cozumel (Woman traveling alone) in 2015 and did not have any problems. I'm just a timid traveler.

Just checked Southwest.com and found TPA to CUN (connect in FLL) for $491.98 round trip. The ADO bus will take you to Playacar and the ferry is only a few blocks from the bus terminal. The bag drag is not difficult. We’ve done it.

Disclaimer: I work for Southwest.

Also here is a video showing He bag drag.

We love southwest. I despise American. I will pay more to not fly American.

Luckily, with southwest we don’t have to. We traded in a butt of points and the whole fam is doing the bag drag. We’re coming in the day before because I’m making our teens do the navigation to Cancun as a learning experience.

I always check the airline websites. I usually find better prices than any of the search engines. Some airlines have better searches than others. I like the searches that allow non-specific dates - example: "My Dates Are Flexible" or "±3 days".

For trips that can't be direct flights I check different airlines for each leg. It's tedious but often well worth it. Not always in terms of price but often in travel time. Once I find the best route/airlines I keep repeating the search several times a week

And
I start checking 11 months out. Right now I am looking for roundtrip tickets to Belize City from Albany, NY for around April 15, 2019 to about April 24, 2019. Right now tickets aren't even available for that time period. They will be soon (over the next couple weeks). When I see something acceptable, I'll jump on it.
