Will this be safe to dive?

Good Day All, I for some reason wanted a Scuba Pro R109 after watching VDH’s video about rebuilding them. I bought a couple off a auction site and they showed up today. Boy are they rough. Plan is to rebuild the better of the two using a duro poppet conversion, New diaphragm retainer, and mouthpiece. My issue is the inside of this reg. The chrome is coming off and I don’t know if it’s safe to dive that way. I am assuming the brown stuff underneath is brass? Anyway, does this reg have a prayer?

Yes, it can be cleaned up and serviced. I've dealt with worse. You can soak it in white vinegar overnight to help break up the build up, then place it in an ultrasonic cleaner. You can also use a brass brush to remove the build up.

Great, that’s what I was hoping to hear.

A soak in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water in an ultrasonic bath will clean that up. You will lose a fair amount of chrome that goes beyond the corrosion. As the brass is exposed a good soak and drying well after use will be necessary.

Don't soak it in pure vinegar (50/50 max) or any longer than needed to clean off any green corrosion. Vinegar can and will take off chrome if excessively used. In no case should you soak it overnight in any vinegar solution.

I too have seen worse and successfully brought them back to life, not so pretty but great personality.

One way to help stabilise the now-exposed brass is to use a solution like Birchwood Casey Brass Black.
Birchwood Casey Sporting Goods - Brass Black Touch-Up
It converts the bare brass to a more stable black oxidised layer that will help resist further corrosion esp if the case is heated in hot water after treatment, dried and the treated areas sealed with wax while still hot.

A black oxide layer, now that might look cool.

The Birchwood Casey solution does work best if you warm the brass first, degrease thoroughly and apply 3-4 coats. Then rinse off, dry and warm again when applying wax to seal it... fairly durable esp if inside the reg body.
If you really want to get serious you need Ultra Blak 420

Doesn't look that bad to me, you may be rebuilding both before you know it. It's a sickness, not a hobby.
