I was totally in aware that Richard had left us ...
So many gone... so few remain ...it is becoming a lonely world .
I was thinking of you and yours during the big mud slide. I sincerely hope there was no encounters of the muddy type.

I was working with Richard on a old timer underwater guy's book and read three weeks ago of his passing on his Facebook page. Not sure what happened..but your still with us, wonderful. Think it be good to drive up and see you. Love, Bob and Susanne

You are always welcome to visit...but not for a while ....Wife Betty is on a temporary assignment down in Long Beach as a community college VP--And we are in the middle of a house remodel -- But there is a guest room and your name will be on it...
This week end we are having the SLO UW S&R Divcon in Pismo on Saturday 17 March -8 to 5...$10.00 includes lunch and a rather substantial syllabus .
.I will lead off presenting "Before Amazon -Sears, Wards and Pennys Scuba retailers" I have made copies of ALL the retailers catalogs which I will discuss and copies of the catalogs will be included in the syllabus...Firs time to my knowledge that the effect of the retailers on the early diving world has been discussed
The others will present, ---2 hyperbaric docs, Karl from the chamber etc....It is a full day of diving knowledge
And the food ! enough to feed the 150 divers or 500 humans ! Great and lots of it !
A number from your area are attending-- the one who comes immediately to mind it Ed Stetson who as I recall lives in or around SB
Why don't you bring up some fins for display and join in the fun ?

So true, Sam, but there are new generations coming up to replace those we've lost. They may not be pioneers, but they'll carry on.

I had the pleasure of spending a week with Richard up in Browning Pass, in BC a few years ago. He wasn't diving, but we had some great rummy chats at night.
Richard, being from Florida, was not used to the "generous" tides in Browning... Up to 18'! One afternoon, be borrowed a little Whaler and headed off exploring. As dinner approached, there was no sign of him, so a search followed. Within a short while, we found him, alive and well. He'd beached his little boat and tied the painter to a tree, then set off in search of deer to photograph. When he returned an hour later, his skiff was high and dry, and the engine was impaling the gravel beach. He wasn't going anywhere... He had a handheld VHF, but the signal was lost in the hilly terrain.
I was up in that area this fall again, and when we passed that little bay, I joked with John the Owner that that bay should be named Richard's Cove, in light of his prolonged visit. (Something we razzed him about all week and for years after.)
In light of this sad news, I think the name will stick.
He was an interesting guy and a real pioneer. But man, he had bad hair...
