Which pee valve?

Btw-I'm nit casting a vote because IDK what to get (hence the post) or advantages/disadvantages to each dedign.
Strangely many people prefer unbalanced as they claim they're less likely to leak. Other posts that I read mentioned problems with the LM (but loved the Halcyon), so it's strange that it's received the most votes thus far.
Perhaps LM just had a bad batch or corrected the problem?

Lowviz: Forgive my ignorance, but I wasn't aware that people used ethanol to rinse their valves...I prefer my eto over ice! Lol

I would have guessed that isopropyl alcohol would be used more frequently based on price alone...but, as I stated, IDK much about p valves. I'm getting one this week, so I thought that I should educate myself a bit.

Fwiw-I would guess that isopropyl alcohol is just as bad...probably worse if not diluted. Most ETO is ~40% (80 proof) while 70-90% iso is NOT uncommon.


BTW-I AM going to do the install myself. I'm blessed to have a GREAT LDS with truly EXCELLENT owner/staff. He's going to show me what to do & let me do the install at his shop (access to tools, glue etc.)!

Yes, you are correct. Nobody uses ethanol (that way).

Isopropyl alcohol is one methyl unit longer and somewhat more forgiving on gaskets. I spoke broadly when I said 'alcohol'. Since you asked...

Why is ethanol digestible and propanol not? Your tca cycle knocks off chunks in twos. With IPA you are left with a single methy unit that your bod turns into formaldehyde. That is another 'quick' answer.

Yes, I know the feeling. I had a great LDS, too. Bring a hair dryer with you in case they don't have a hot air gun handy. Duct tape a serious mask. Heat is hard on the duct tape, but it will take it.

Run it through in your mind, have everything prepped and ready, and don't rush anything. Time and care are your friends. You will know when you have enough coatings of neo cement. All of a sudden, it goes shiny.

It's kind of cool to chat with someone else [I took (& tutored some of my more attractive classmates) Organic I & II in college. I've been helping my GF with Chemistry too. She can't seem to understand IUPAC nomenclature though] who understands WHY something does/doesn't work. I don't think that the importance of that (knowledge/understanding) can be overstated.

I agree with your plan for installing the p valve.: i.e. "TAKE YOUR TIME." I watched a few videos too, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on the proper procedure.

Although my LDS IS excellent, time still=$$...a point that you previously made.I'll have access to their tools and supplies, their (& your) expertise but MY time!

Yes, indeed. Chem was my first undergrad degree. Still love the field. IUPAC is much like computer programming. Apply the rules diligently and you will come up with a mouthful of unpronounceable stuff that precisely defines the molecule. None of that is in the lit. Common names abound. But it is a rite of passage.

Indeed. Far too many educated minds and stupid hands these days. Real knowledge is something that can be applied to real life.

*When I started helping my GF with Gen Chem I discovered that she wss trying to MEMORIZE shells, valences etc. I taught her how to READ the table [thank you, Dmitri Mendeleev! (spelling?)]. She was blown away that it became so easy! IDK why she wasn't taught that (reading the 'table) in HS??

Sorry, I don't think that I was clear about what she was studying...my fault!

Although she eventually did have to learn the (sp, d etc.) sub shells, at that point it was just knowing the basic (is this the Bohr model? I'm not 100% sure of the name) "shells..." as in 2e-, 8e- etc.

She had to know # of e- in the outer shell and how many e- to fill that shell. VERY basic, but there's no reason (IMO) to memorize this info...just learn how to read the Periodic Table...which is what I taught her. As I stated, she did have to learn the subshells, but that was a semester or two later.

I think that I have gotten off topic a bit...sorry!

I will probably go with either the DR or Halcyon p valves. There's a fairly high "H tax" to be paid if I don't get the DR though. I believe that the LDS carries Light Monkey too; it was ahead in the poll the last time that I checked..

I should know by the end of the week as my 1st non-pool drysuit dive is Sunday! Yeah!!
