all this talk of redundancy, yet no one seems to buy into my recommendation of buying a doubles regulator set instead of singles so you have a spare first stage on the dive boat for the same reason with talks of "global service".... curious

I don't dive locally. I fly to get to about 99% of all of my dives. Carrying an extra computer is much easier than carrying an extra reg set. Carrying an extra first stage might not be so bad, though. I guess I am thinking of saving the dive. If my reg fails during the dive, I have a backup. But, the dive will be called and maybe the second dive, too. But, a reg failure underwater is a lot more critical than a computer flooding/futzing.

Also, all dive operators have dealt with have rental regulators. Not all have rental computers.

learn tables or ratio deco. Wear a watch. You are doing recreational diving, ride your buddies computer if you have to to finish a dive or a day of diving. A broken computer is not a reason to call a dive IMO. It's an inconvenience. You also have a Perdix AI, the extent of it failing is going to be a dead battery if you are the same type of person that sees how far they can go when the gas light comes on and the trip computer says 0-miles on your car. If you fill up between a quarter and half tank, you never have to worry. I have yet to hear of a dead shearwater from Predator and newer causing someone to call a dive or day other than a couple isolated flooded battery compartments that they resolved with the Perdix. I'm sure it's happened to someone, and I know some of them have gone funky with rebreathers *usually the wires between the head and the computer, but haven't heard of any perdix failures. They are reliable enough that I don't carry a backup on 3+ hour cave dives with me, granted I know the rough deco profile coming out, but even on a big ocean trip I have a knotted spool with 10ft increment knots starting at 70ft, I wear a watch, and use ratio deco and/or tables assuming my buddies computer also died.

Hi @tbone1004

Not everyone dives, or wants to dive, like you do. I dive mostly rec, often solo, dive an AI primary with a backup computer and SPG. I've used the backup computer a couple of times, the SPG a couple times more, in about 1200 dives, enough for me.

Good diving, Craig

So..., someone on eBay seems to have a supply of TX-1's for sale (new). For $359, plus $12 for shipping, it seems like a good deal to me.

Could be, see my post #10. I like to have my backup match my primary computer. There aren't any inexpensive computers running Buhlmann, maybe Deep 6 will come through with their computer someday, we've been waiting a long time

If I'm correct, the Tx-1 is Hollis's trimix computer. Seems overkill for what you are looking for. I actually use one of Hollis's non-trimix puck computers as a back-up in gauge mode. If you're just looking for a back-up, you can find a cheaper computer to run in gauge mode as a bottom timer.

Unless you want a computer

It can handle trimix, but can do air and nitrox. It can also read my transmitter. It can also closely match the NDL of my Perdix.

If you'd like all those features, then sure, it'll be a fine back up computer. I've been diving my Hollis puck for a couple of years in gauge mode and it's been great.
