The other side is just displaying my name, ID,, the shop name, instructor ID & the year when I get OW certification (2005). No level. Not even the date of when I get this Nitrox certification (2008). Strange.

I would avoid that like the plague. They may very well teach you the correct calculations, etc. I suspect, however, if you present a card issued by "Scuba Divers of America" some shops might give you this look, and not give you a fill.

Actually, SDA and their online training courses are very well known. Unfortunately they are well known for NOT being valid. The certification is not accepted anywhere. PADI has been including a warning and explanation why they aren't accepted in every quarterly training update going back years now.

I got my SSI Nitrox card in 2016. There were two levels. I did both and got the card that says up to 40%. As I recall, the second level boiled down to answering several more test questions.

I am interested in taking the SSI nitrox course. I just looked on the website and it says

The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox program will teach you how to safely plan and dive with enriched air mixtures of up to 40% oxygen. [...] You will earn the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32% or 40% certification after completing this program.

What determines if you get the "32%" or the "40%" certification after the program? Is it how well you do on some theory exam?

What determines whether your certification level is your exam score. I believe the standard is 70% = 32% and 80% = 40%, but those numbers may be off a little bit.

I am not an SSI instructor - but the way I understand it is that the course can be broken in 2 and you can be certified at 32 with a subset, or at 40 with the full course.

I just recently got around to doing my nitrox cert and went with SSI (my other certs are PADI) just due to price. My instructor basically asked me "you want the 40% not just the 32%, right?" and of course I said yes. As far as I can tell there's a basic training segment that gets you to 32% and then an extra optional chunk that gets you to 40%. Not sure about any price difference. Took me a couple hours staring at my phone, back to the LDS the next day to take the test and walk through how to check a tank (and many silly questions about how their fill system works, I love shiny objects) and demonstrating that I know how to use a table and make my computer do the nitrox dance and I was good to go. Printed me off a temp card right there in the store and got the hard card (for an extra fee of course) in the mail shortly thereafter.

Honestly I think nitrox should be part of OW certification. Just makes so much more sense. Frankly it's not like this stuff is rocket surgery anyways.

am i correct in my understanding that you received no classroom presentation at all ? you said it is not "rocket surgery" (i think you meant rocket science btw haha just joking) but are you able and confident that you could plan and execute a repetitive dive series using the nitrox tables, EAD tables, and o2 toxicity calculations etc ? most people are not after only doing the online work unless they were very diligent in their studies. if you are, then good for you for putting in the effort.

According to the current SSI course standards document, if you pass the first three sections of the four sections of the EAN course then you receive the EAN32 card. If you pass all four sections then you receive the EAN40 card. You must answer 80% or greater for a pass. This pass level of 80% is used for all rec level courses (the pass level is 90% for pro courses). The fourth section is about PLANNING nitrox dives.

I believe the reason for the split, and the selection of EAN32 as the point of the split, is that for the "rec depth limit" of 130ft you are still below a PPO2 of 1.6ata. At higher O2 concentrations you exceed 1.6ata at less than the "max" depth.
