Does anyone know the details of Ley Seca (alcohol prohibition over the election) this weekend in Cozumel? I believe the sate goes dry at midnight tonight until midnight Monday but I thought that there was an exemption for non citizens in designated tourist areas. Anyone know the specifics for Cozumel?

COZUMEL, MX.- Given the proximity of the electoral process that will take place next Sunday, July 1, the revenue collector in Cozumel, Blanca Estela Uch Mezo, made a call to all business owners where alcoholic beverages are sold to that respect the law, because who does not comply with "the dry law", will be creditor to the closure of the premises up to a fine of between 78 to 90 thousand pesos.

"All owners and those responsible for the sale of alcohol, are prohibited from alienating or selling these products, those who are not in the tourist area, who do not have a sales patent with food, they are prohibited from selling alcohol," he explained.

He clarified that this provision exempts hotels "all inclusive", in addition to those who have a license to sell alcoholic beverages with food, but they must be located in the hotel zone and the first square of the city.

Uch Mezo explained that this alcohol ban will start from the first minute of Saturday, June 30 and end Monday, Monday, until midnight.

"Who does not respect this regulation, will be creditor to the closure of the establishment and a fine between 78 and 90 thousand pesos, so it is better to respect the law, so it is the advance notice and all citizens know, that in At the time of the elections, there are these prohibitions to prevent problems from being generated in the heat of alcohol, "he said. Not sure how accurate the auto translate is. 'First square' is that only the square at the foot of Juarez or the 'El Centro' region.

The original text (el primer cuadro del ciudad) could easily be (mis)translated to "the first square of the city," whatever that means, but more likely means Zone 1 of El Centro. So, the most touristy of touristy areas are exempted if they also sell food.

OMG - the inflatable Corona bottle will be limp all weekend! The city I live in used to not sell beer on holidays like New Years.....

If it is an establishment that sells food within 1 block of water and have proper license, they can sell alcohol within their establishment. They have the right and should be checking IDs of all patrons to ensure they are not Mexican nationals. The law applies to Mexican Nationals for the purpose of having sober elections.

I am very proud to be voting in my first Mexican election!!! Soy Mexicana!!!!!

Excuse my ignorance but are drunken voters a “thing” in Mexico? My understanding has always been that laws are backed by legitimate policy reasons. Or at least that’s what they tell you LOL. Is there a legitimate policy reason for this law?

Generally speaking, Laws serve as a moral standard or conduct expected from citizens. In this case, it’s a Law that the Mexican Government has to encourage its population to focus on their Presidential Elections. We may not understand why this is, but it is. I’m happy to see Mexico and it’s democracy continue going forward.
Mexicans are so welcoming, they are our neighbors and are hard working people. @Christi, congratulations on being a Mexicana and for casting your vote.
Cheers,
Ricardo
