You don't need a special snowflake d-ring. There's zero reason for that.

Unclip the bottom boltsnap, swing the tank out in front of you so yo u can see what you're doing and use two hands, stow the hose, clip it back. The end.

Fwiw, I keep both rubber bands near the hose clamp. One above and one below.

Learn to stow it properly bro! :p

(I leave it clipped, stow the hose along the outside of the cylinder, then push the hose and reg inside towards the stage strap.)

I have no problem stowing the inside or the outside stage reg without unclipping the tail. Must be a skills issue o_O

Why do you need to unclip and swing the bottle forward for a QC6 whip? What am I missing? (I have spare QC6 whips but only unstowed one once, in Peacock of all places.)

Its goofy to get at and there's so much going on that its easy for hoses to get tangled up. Swinging it out is way better.

Well you aren't supposed to be using a bottom stage in rec3
I get your point. By definition, Rec 3 trains for 1 deco bottle not a bottom stage. The way I approached the training was that I wanted to learn how to use a single slung tank all the procedures associated with that. For me, everything I learned in Rec 3 could be applied to the type of dives I'm doing if I use it as a stage as opposed to deco. Worked for me in the grand total 5 dives I've done this way so far. Anywho ...

try moving the top rubber band up around 1.5" / 3cm below the crown, the lower one is maybe 12" below that, perhaps 2/3rds of the way down the stage strap hose.
I will try this on my next dive.

And use your elbow to push down the butt of the tank
And this as well. I'm using my left hand right now and I think that's making my body twist more than it needs to and hard to manage the bottle.

FWIW, I want to practice and get comfortable with both, stowing the stage hose while clipped and also out in front of me. Also, the clipping and unclipping of the stage correctly without relying on the 2nd D-ring. I removed it last night.

Thank you for the input so far. Much appreciated!

There is absolutely no reason to add a second hip D-Ring. As others have recommended learn to clip the stage bolt snap. Be mindful that all of the tech training courses, whether GUE, TDI, etc will give you a start and a beginning. None of us are experts after finishing courses. With practice, what came with difficulty will come with ease. Yes, reattaching your SPG to your hip D-ring will pose a challenge when there is a second bolt snap, and possibly a third depending on what you brought with you on the dive.

Take your time with the procedure. Logically think and reason out the problem. Have I gone gate to gate, gate to body of bolt snap? Have I foobared the restowing of the stage reg? Many times!! Cool thing is my buddy is in front and we debrief after the dive to discuss the hickups and what we need to do for improvements...

R3 teaches deco with 32%, hence you won't have to relabel your cylinder, whether you use it as a deco or stage bottle. However, as your instructor has undoubtedly told you, the stage is used before your backgas. Some of us started carrying stage bottles strictly for the practice of deployent/restowing of hoses and to learn to reclip on the hip D-Ring, regardless of the required gas expenditure. I will caution you with a certain mentality that developed with this, the gradual development of laziness in analyzing the required amount of gas for a specific dive plan and just brining extra gas... Yes, I had to unwean myself from this...

O.

A few problems I've ran into during my travels, may or may not apply.

Small "warm water" bolt snaps and short leashes. Fine in Florida but not so much with cold water gloves on. I like to have a full hand purchase on the leash which places my thumb right at the gate automatically. Fumbling around back there with just a few fingers in a tight space sucks and at best frustrating.

I pop an o-ring over the D ring so it stands up but still has give to it.
