I don’t really agree with the last paragraph as it’s not really true but I think as people get more experienced, their ego lessens at the same time.
Usually but not always, some of the biggest bloviators are instructors :p

... maybe @PfcAJ or @lv2dive or @mer can chip in, I am sure they notice the GUE topics a bit more closely than I do.

Someone rang?... I know this is easier said than done (and I wish at times I could follow my own advice), but try to dive your own plan and ignore the naysayers. Smile, nod, say thanks for the input, and do your own thing. Do your own research, make the choices that are best for you, ignore the noise.

Always remember that what is best for you, your values, your goals, your lifestyle, your family is not always the same conclusion for someone else. It goes both ways and I try to give people the benefit of the doubt (until they prove to me they don't deserve that :-/ )

I've found the most experienced, active divers are the quiet ones in the back of the room, especially when there are new people around.

Oh man, that guy is definitely not all there. The OP is obviously a much nicer person (yes I admit my critics will say that doesn’t mean much).

As long as people dive and don’t kill themselves or sea life, who cares?

OW: no ego or small one. GUE Diver: no ego.

Few hundred dives or instructor: bigger ego maybe.

Honed Technical Diver: no ego.

(In my experience)

Lol... you haven’t been around a lot of tech divers?

Ego asserts itself in different ways. Most tech divers I know have more ego than an average OW diver... but to your point, that does not mean they are arrogant.

I know what you’re saying but with the guys I’ve met they weren’t arrogant or egotistic. I have heard of a lot of tech divers being egotistic but I think that’s on the decrease.

I’ve spent more time with rec divers though so my experience isn’t accurate.
