L&W compressors @ Buddy Dive in Bonaire running almost 24 hours/day.

Do you mean the price distributors pay or distributor charge?

Profit margin is the difference between what they pay and what they charge their customers. (There is formula that gives it in %).

I'm not asking what a profit margin is.

I'm asking what you mean by "distributor prices" - is that the price the distributor pays to buy it (from the importer) or is that the price the distributor sells it for (to the retailer).

In this specific case, both. I know what their gross profit is, at least in my region.

So you are implying that at a retail price of $5k, everyone is barely making a profit?

They most likely are, definitely not the percentages mentioned earlier in the thread.

longer expected service life due to better build quality. higher upfront cost, but you expect to get it back by having less downtime and keeping the compressor for more years without major repairs or replacement. math probably wouldn't work for someone just doing a few dozen fills a year in their garage though.

Not true on each and every point made.

I live less than 20 miles from where the L&W compressors are made, and have done a bit of business with them in the past.
They are a quality operation and their products are at least as good as those made by Bauer.
Unlike Nuvair (Coltrisub MCH-6) they are not designed to fail before 500 hours of use, and can be expected to require service (oil change) after about 1000 hours and repair approaching 4-5000 hours (Drive belts, valves, piston rings n sleeves). Haven't yet seen one that was badly enough broken that it wasn't worth repairing.
BTW the bigger Coltrisub compressors, MCH-16 and bigger, are also well worth having, I've seen lots of them in operation at dive destinations in Italy and Croatia with happy owners. Only the MCH-6, which is normally sold to end users, doesn't hold up well. Coltri would be doing themselves a big favour if they stopped production of that model. Michael

Again not true on each and every point you made. Starting with your oil claim.
The first problem with the LW 100E compressor was with the introduced the oil changes were:
L&W Compressor Models LW100B LW 100E LW100E1
25 Hours Running hours. 1st oil change
75 Hours Running hours. 2nd oil change
275 Hours Running hours. 3rd oil change
500 Hours Running hours. All subsequent oil changes
They also added: Independent of the running hours accumulated, L&W recommend an oil change every 12 calendar months.

Understandably this appears too difficult a concept for the scuba market to comprehend so it was simplified to my previous post of:
25 Hours Running hours. 1st oil change
250 Hours Running. All subsequent oil changes

Added to the fact that the original 500 hours running was way to optimistic for the “tea cup” of lubricant used was expected to last. So it’s now half the life it used to be and double the cost. Hope dies last I guess.

But you are being very misleading with your statement regarding the oil change at 1000 hours
The rest of your misleading comments maybe we could address later. Iain

But it's NOT the $5000 LW100 model we have in question. Please keep to the subject matter and LW100 model number in hand.

Understood; but I was indirectly referring to the fact that its a good enough compressor that a high volume place like Buddy put their trust in it. I should have mentioned it.
