I've self-reported several times. Usually when I've posted something and then started thinking "damn, was that out of line, or am I still within the ToS and any Special Rules?" If that happens, a self-report is basically a way to ask the mod corps whether or not I crossed the line.

The good thing with that is that you get a very tangible feedback on whether or not you're playing within the rules of the forum.

Heck, I'd buy him a real beer if he wanted one.
I certainly would if he ever comes over the pond or I make it to his neck of the woods but it would certainly be more than one. I owe a lot of my understanding of SCUBA to him (there is a difference between knowledge and understanding and he has been the difference sometimes).

Personally, I didn't see anything said here to be all that harsh but obviously BoulderJohn did. I guess I can be a bit obtuse when it comes to my perception of the intent of a post.

For what it's worth, because things are easily misinterpreted on the net. I have no problems with John, I often like his posts, and no one should insinuate anything from me answering BRT's question. In hindsight, perhaps I should not have quoted DD's final exchange, but from the sound of it, something else is going on. I find it hard to believe he would leave solely due to this thread. I am a member here, not a mod, so I have no clue about the backroom discussions or other incidents. From a users point of view, we only see what we see posted. I did not agree with the ban, but it's not my board. Threads like this never go well.

I've self-reported several times.
The people who self-report are rarely the problem. In fact, I don't think they've EVER been a problem. They seem to want what's best for the community and not just themselves.

Sorry but you can't take back what someone else read before you had your change of heart. People who have read it remember for good or ill. I have seen people deliberately push other posters buttons, even make accusations and personal attacks then re-consider their post and delete/rewrite it leaving their victim looking like the ass hat because they aren't all sweetness and light in response to their tormentor.

A few might abuse the delete, but when you report yourself, a Mod has to delete for you, so you can’t sleaze the whole conversation past them.
Not to strangle you with my rosary beads, but first we “repent”, then we learn to “sin no more”, so in my case, waking up in the morning in a cold sweat over something i posted in the heat of the night, I am happy to delete if I can, beg salvation from the The Gods who Mod, and try to not be post number 666.

Not to drown your message out with the clacking of with my rosary beads, but first we “repent”, then we learn to “sin no more”, so in my case, waking up in the morning in a cold sweat over something i posted in the heat of the night, I am happy to delete if I can, beg salvation from the The Gods who Mod, and try to not be post number 666.

I really miss learning a lot from people explaining things to RossH.
I keep chuckling over this. I think he lasted so long because we felt the same way.

BoulderJohn, I’ll miss your posts, I learned a lot from them.

I decided a few weeks ago that I had had enough of ScubaBoard in my life. Since then I have made only a few impulsive posts, and this will be the first in a week. I have been checking in on ScubaBoard pretty much every day, but every day that I choose not to post, even when I think I have something valuable to say, makes the next day's abstinence easier.

This post may be my last. This place has become just too unfriendly for me, [... ... ...] . So for now, I am choosing to stay away from this sort of toxic environment.

I hope that after some time away from SB, the positives of SB are remembered and a return is considered.

[all bolding is mine]

@boulderjohn. We have never met, but I have greatly appreciated, and learned a great deal from every one of your posts since I joined in 2010. I sincerely hope you will change your mind about leaving SB. Divers and Mods like you are incredible assets to divers of all skill and experience levels. If you decide you must leave, thank you for everything you have contributed to making us better and safer divers. Happy Holidays.
