My wife was admitted to the International Hospital here in Cozumel last night with cutaneous DCS. She spent 5 hrs in the chamber last night doing USN Table 6, and will be repeating Table 6 shortly. The DAN insurance is covering everything. Disclaimer: My wife and I are not DAN employees nor are we affiliated with DAN. I can't imagine what this sort of treatment would cost without insurance, so my advice is to buy the DAN insurance.

I've had DAN ever since I was certified back in the mid-80's.

Fortunately for me and my wife, we have never had to use it.

Hope your wife recovers completely, and glad to see that DAN worked for you when you needed it.

It's the best $125 I spend every year. Any idea what caused the hit?

Hope she's back in the water soon!

I have been following instances of "skin bends" with great interest. It seems as if they are becoming more frequent.

Great that you are connected with DAN, a fantastic resource for the dive industry. Do you have any idea about causation? Could ascent rates have been a factor?

Praying she is doing much better now and thankful you were covered!

+1 on the DAN insurance. And hope things go well with your wife's treatments.

Hope all goes well for her quick recovery.
Sopa de mariscos or fish caldo works better than chicken soup.
The sopa de lima is basically chicken stock based. Maybe some comfort food might help her spirits.
Room Service will deliver almost anything to anywhere for 35 pesos.

Agree 100% about having and keeping DAN insurance up to date yearly! Praying for quick resolution for her symptoms. Hope they put on a good movie for her to enjoy during her chamber time. You are in good hands there, and I am sure the staff is taking good care of you too as you sit and wait outside the chamber. I hope your dive op has come by to check on you guys also. Blessings for safe travels home after this incident and a good follow up with a DAN recommended dive doctor near your hometown once you return to the USA.

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. We'll know more about her status in a few hours but it's anticipated that she's in for more hyperbaric chamber sessions.

I hope she recovers and has no residual effects.

Skin bends (cutaneous DCS) are not to be taken lightly at all because if not treated CAN turn to Type II DCS. However, if treatment started right away (same day symptoms present) it usually clears up in a single session - especially if it was a table 6. I've never know a cutaneous DCS case to need more than one hyperbaric treatment, in fact, in most cases the first line of treatment for skin bends is with 100% surface O2 under medical supervision for an hour or two with evaluation before resorting to hyperbaric treatment. Was she having other symptoms other than the skin rash?
