Has anyone dived the Genius yet? Review?

I couldn't tell from the manual, what is the range for GF high? In rec mode, looks like it may be 90. In tec mode, is the custom setting range to 100, or something else?

Hi @scubadada
To answer your question I contacted Mares directly. Here is my question and their response;

Dear Mares,
I am interested in the new Genius but have some questions that are not addressed in the user manual. What are the gradient factor settings for each of the following; R0,R1,R2,R3 and T0,T1,T2,T3 and what is the range for GF High and GF low in the custom settings; meaning what is the minimum and maximum values. And specifically, is 90/90 the maximum setting?

Thanks for contacting us regarding our new Genius dive computer. Please see the requested information below:

R0 – 85/85
R1 – 70/80
R2 – 60/70
R3 – 50/60

T0 – 30/85
T1 – 30/75
T2 – 25/60
T3 – 25/40

Custom:
GF LOW 10 to 85
GF HIGH 30 to 85
90/90 can be set only via R0 then PERSONALIZATION/PHYSIO/ADVANCED

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

I’ve been diving with the Mares Genius since July. I’ll breakdown what I like and don’t like about it.

What I like:
  • Large and bright display.
  • Color coding make it very easy to use.
  • 4 buttons and ability to go back instead of only forwarded like some computers.
  • Battery life is very good.
  • Menu is very user friendly.
  • Price is very reasonable for what you get compared to some other computers.

What I don’t like:
  • Dive log app (MySSI) totally sucks if you are a person that likes a lot of data, but if all you care about are the very basics, you will like it.
  • The tank pressure will not register on your dive computer until you’re already in the water for a few minutes (maybe this I glitch that will be fixed with the next firmware update that comes out?).
  • The maximum depth alarm comes on prematurely. It should come on at the maximum depth it’s supposed to based on gas mixture and ppO2 settings, but instead it comes on way too early and it’s annoying because it starts flashing red. When I got back to surface I checked all the settings to make sure they were correct, and they were. I also wear a Perdix and it wasn’t alarming. Both dive computers indicated the same depth and both had the same settings for ppO2 and gas mixture.
  • The ascent rate seems to be something much slower than 30 fpm. I kept getting warnings I was ascending too fast even though my Perdix and my two dive partners’s computers indicated we were ascending at the correct rate of 30 fpm.
I’m hoping these issues with the Mares Genius can be resolved because there a lot of things I really like about this computer, but if not I don’t think this computer will be very useful to me on any dives below 100 feet because it seems to work fine on the shallower dives of around 60-80 feet.
