Triggering ADV

Good day,

I just have a simple question actually;
At what amount of millibar would you recommend to trigger the ADV on an ECCR?

To avoid high DIL->O2 usage in the lower end, and pulmonary edema in the other, I've ended up at around 45-55mbar to trigger it. Am i on to something?


In advance; for different reasons its not satisfactory for my use, to have it too tight and use it manually always.

Who has an ADV that is "adjustable"?
My kiss has very limited capacity to adjust it. My Meg even less unless you dissect a schrader valve and somehow manipulate the strength of the tiny spring inside. I dont know the design of other ADVs but I frequently dive with mine shut off completely anyway

There’s adjustability built into those ADV’s that use second stage guts. My SF2 and my Pelagian are this way.

I use one that's adjustable.

If you dont use an adjustable one, you know what mbar is you non-adjustable set to?

I had this made for a chestmount

Millibars, huh, I set the first stage to 8-9 bar if I even check
then the ADV to sensitive with the knob out, exactly like open circuit

anyway I might get rid of it and go manual only

but this one on another homemade I leave doing what it does

Haha your post made me laugh at least

To clarify; The ADV is adjustable as i can tighten/losen the spring , and read of the mbar values as i make it trigger. So i have it at a "comfortable" value, not leaking DIL, and not to tight to activate "automatically". So I just want to know if 45-55mbar(on surface) is an acceptable value.
Experiences/studies/opinions things like that.

50-55mbar works nicely. Not freeflowing even when head down descending.

I can suggest one. But not so much that it is designed to be adjustable, rather checked before shipping and adjusted/set to meet the CE requirements. With this detail, the actual cracking pressure, included in the shipping checklists.

I'm amazed this dude hasn't been banned yet. The only reason he's not on a bunch of peoples ignore list is so we can warn other divers to stay away.

@pesstrus , this guy went on a bunch of forums to try and retroactively manufacture evidence so that his partner could use it to bolster his "expert" testimony in a lawsuit again Lamar Hires and Dive Rite after Wes Skiles' wife sued them for his death. Needless to say his manufactured evidence was forcefully inserted waaaaaay up his butt so far I bet he could taste it in the back of his mouth. Search on the common forums for APOC and you'll see all of the shady stuff these guys do.

I'm not sure how to measure the cracking pressure to be honest.

The kiss uses a diaphram that I could probably submerge and measure the depth it cracks at (its superficially similar to a 2nd stage)
the Meg is a plunger pushing on an oversized Schrader valve

I dont know of any data suggesting ADVs are related to pulmonary edema. Do you have some papers or citations about that?

@rjack321 The pulmonary edema comment i made wasnt serious. However what i've been taught is that from sucking a negative pressure of > -40mbar may cause pulmonary edema. However i presume that must be over time constantly breathing through -40mbar each inhale, such as a poor WOB.
