Hieverybody!
I'm living in Santa Marta,Colombia.74Yrs Young.I do Water Detecting with my Minelab Excalibur. With some help/Info I would like to design a Hand Pump, mounted on a Float, incorporating a small reservoir, to give me One good Breath,in ducking to Fan a Target I can hold a Breath, just long enough to Fan down to the Hard pack Sand/Coral/Shell.I feel another good breath would allow me to expose the Target. If I leave ,and go to the Surface,by the Time I can get back down from recovery, the Hole is filling back in!..First,the Pump.I need to learn how much Pressure/Cap(Liters Per Minute) I need out of the Pump,to get Air down to around 5Ft.I work mostly in Chest deep Water.Anything more than that you pretty much need to sling Lead.Which I HATE...For some odd reason,at around 125Lbs and 5'8" I need 9 Two Pounders,And 3 pds on my Ankles!!!!!!!.I think my Bones are hollow!
I'm thinking, maybe a fairly high volume Dinghy Inflater,or adapting a Garden Sprayer.Maybe float it on a 4' PVC frame as a Float/Air Reserve tank.? 18'' by 18'' or whatever it takes. Please,be gentle in you Reply's Ja ja....
Appreciate any input,and thanks..PS I blow up a Ballon to around 180ccs..Yes,I smoke!..........stoneshirt.

I would really not recommend doing this for all sorts of reasons, and I'm a very pro DIY person
If you're going to do this, just float an aluminum 80 and put a 7-9ft regulator hose on there. It will last you all day and be much better

now. If you're hell bend on doing it, some math.

Hookah regulators are designed to work at a minimum of 50psi supply. 5ft is only about 4psi of pressure, so we'll ignore that for now. Your system needs 1l of available capacity above 50psi in order for a hookah second stage to work which is quite small. Most garden sprayers max at 45psi which is marginal for this application. Theoretically it will be close enough, but you also need to change the hose out for a larger bore scuba hose.

tbone. Thanks for the Reply.I won't be using a Regulator.Just some sort of Nozzle I can carry down with my free Hand and stick in my Mouth for a Hit of Air.The only thing I would keep in mind would be not holding that breath standing up again, although I've read conflicting "info" from different Posters on the dangers of blowing out a Lung coming up from "as little as Four feet."...I don't think so.Can you offer any constructive Commits? I failed to mention that i live on $570.00 Dollars a Month down here,so it's not all Sail Boats and Champagne, for me.Why are you so apprehensive of my plan? I'm 74,now,and this is me on the left at 14,so I'm no NEWBE...stoneshirt.

@stoneshirt you can certainly have an overexpansion injury in 4ft of water.
I didn't note your location so my apologies. Reason for pushing a floating tank is because you can get a full setup for about $300 on the used market in the US and be much better off. For that price it isn't worth the hassle or risk of DIY. In Colombia, that may not be quite so easy or cheap.

The nozzle is going to have to be sufficiently large to flow the air fast enough for you to breathe and something like a garden sprayer won't work for that.

Hello, tbone
"I would really not recommend doing this for all sorts of reasons." That's what Orville said to Wilbur.
I posted my Idea.A little Help would be Idea-l..I needed to start with the Pump/Air supply. What the minimal.Pressure/Output should be?,so as to build the unit around it.I try for stealth on these Beaches, trying not to be noticed much, there's alot of hungry Eyes out,and about...I'll post up some PhotoShop illustrations on some of the problem solving involved on my Idea.It will be small, and light.
Could I get a second, and Third opinion on Exploding your Lungs, coming up from 4Ft.?...That would'nt be a problem anyway, since that's what the real guys do anyway, exhale on Ascending.!..

your lungs can only stand about 10% expansion before they blow up. I.e. you need to figure out the depth at which a volume of gas will expand to 1.1x their original volume.
One atmosphere is equivalent of 33ft which is 2x. Half of that is 17ft or 1.5x. Half of that is 8ft at 1.25x, and half of that is 4ft at 1.125x, 10% of one atmosphere is about 1.5psi for reference. Science therefor says that if you inhale a full breath at anything over about 3ft, close your epiglottis, and make a direct ascent to the surface, your lungs will suffer an overexpansion injury. Yes it has happened to people in the shallow end of a pool, and no they did not have anything else wrong with them. I unfortunately have seen a video of it happening about 15years ago and the student was dead by the end of the video.

Now, how to do what you want to do. Basically you need to make a power snorkel. Similar to electricity where you get to decrease the wire size *equivalent to hose size* as you increase volts *equivalent to pressure*, the lower the pressure of your system, the larger the hose will have to be in order for you to not feel starved for gas when breathing. The higher the pressure the smaller the hose, and equally the smaller the vessel you'll be taking it from.

The garden pump idea is fine, it will work, and you may well be able to modify the nozzle at the end for you to breathe. That said, breathing without a second stage is forbidden by most agencies *bare tank breathing used to be taught, as did breathing directly off of a regulator hose by many instructors*. Those are both able to very easily cause a lung overexpansion injury because the gas is not reduced to ambient pressure before breathing like it is inside of the housing of a second stage regulator. Please be VERY careful if you attempt this, which as an instructor I again have to say I do not recommend, and do a lot of surface exercises first to make sure you have figured out how to get the flow right.

Maybe you could watch some alac pierce vintage scuba videos on YouTube for some ideas. Back in the 50s guys came up with some really ingenious DIY ideas just to get underwater with military surplus and common materials. Just don’t hold your breath when coming up etc, stuff you already know.

Hi.I appreciate your input on this stuff,Thanks. Here is a Collage of some basic Ideas. The Mouthpiece/Regulator part is still Stewing in my Head...I have'nt been able to get to the Hardware Stores,to have a better look at this Sprayer, like you mentioned before."In Colombia, that may not be quite so easy or cheap."...Cheap,yes,easy,no.Everything down here is a major effort. You can pretty much get everything/anything but ou just have to track it down,no "One Stop Shopping"....stoneshirt.
