Headed to Cayman Brac for the 1st time (YAY!!) and have a 5-hour wait at Owen Roberts before the 7:30 hop to Brac. (United arrives at 2:30 and Cayman Airways departs at 7:30 so between clearing customs and fetching luggage it's probably closer to four hours but still.)

I'm a land-locked Pittsburgher who is ridiculously excited to get into the water, and the thought of sitting for hours at the airport after traveling since 5 a.m. makes me antsy. I know, I know, First World Problems. I look to you experienced Bubble Gurus to share your opinion on the best option to soothe my restless soul:

1. Stay in Grand Cayman for a day or two to get wet, then take the super early flight to Brac
2. Walk around the airport and log 20,000 steps on my FitBit so I can eat conch fitters without guilt
3. Sit in the airport and enjoy umbrella drinks until departure time
4. Swim over to Brac :D

Watch 2 x downloaded movies...eat a subway sandwich...

id stay in . the airport. depending on the day it could take you 2 hours to check back in and get to the departure lounge :)

Rent a car and see some of the island, maybe the botanic garden (Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park). We did this about 10 years ago and I think we had a longer layover. Airport conditions may have changed, but it was pretty easy then.

This is about 5 mins north of the airport - contact them in advance and they'll pick you up.
George Town Yacht Club
They serve food all day and have a pool.

With 5 hrs. you could also run over to Sunset House. My Bar there is pleasant with good food and waterfront you can also tour the Cathy Church Photo Gallery/Store and might meet Cathy. Buy a print and ask her to sign it - she's in the Women Divers Hall of Fame. SH is directly across from the airport on the other coast - in fact the flightpath runs right over it. They also have a basic diveshop on site if you forget something but Divers Direct in West Bay is better, pricier and farther away. Cabs are pricey also.

Downtown Georgetown is under 10mins away also if you want to mix it up with the cruisers. I think the botanical gardens would be a stretch in 5 hrs. - they're sort of mid-island.And I think I'd want a car - not sure how long it would take a cab to pick you up there.

@GrannyDiver, as you've said, you may not have 5 hours between flights because you will have to go through immigration, collect your luggage, go through customs, check in for the flight to Brac and recheck your bags.

Sometimes that process goes very quickly and sometimes there are lines and delays. What day of the week are you arriving? Saturdays and Sundays between noon and 3 or 4 pm are usually the busiest times, but you should still have time for a layover excursion. I wouldn't hang around the airport if I could avoid it.

When you say that "United arrives at 2:30 and Cayman Airways departs at 7:30" I'm assuming that you mean 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., is that correct? If you are travelling overnight and in the early a.m. then the choices will be much more limited.

Assuming afternoon and evening, I agree with the suggestion of going to the George Town Yacht Club. It is a nice spot on the marina in a lovely setting. It is only about 3 minutes away from the airport and they will send a gray-colored van to pick you up and bring you back. If you have some carry-on luggage they will stash it for you at the restaurant while you eat.

On Saturdays and Sundays the van makes regular rounds to pick-up and drop-off travelers, but we always call them when we are ready to leave the airport and they arrive quickly. You might want to check with your phone carrier about options in advance to make sure that you will be able to call without paying expensive roaming charges. Wi-Fi is readily available at the airport so you can also make a skype call.

You can relax and eat either indoors or outside at GTYC. Instead of Conch Fritters I recommend the Cracked Conch, it's the best on the island IMO. Whenever we have time between flights to/from the Sister Islands, we head over to the GTYC.

Tell the van driver the time that you want to head back to the airport and she will be waiting for you. If you are flying at 7:30 pm the airport shouldn't be crowded and going through Security to access the departure lounge should be pretty quick, but don't cut it too close because I think that is the last flight of the day to the Sister Islands.

Below are links for the GTYC. On weekdays they open at 11 am but on Saturday and Sunday they open at 8:30 am and serve breakfast. You might want to head over there between your flights back home if you have time.

Something else to consider. Liquor is expensive in Cayman and at the CBBR; did you get a "drinks plan" as part of your package? Drinks ordered a la carte from the bar will be pricey and will include an automatic service charge of 15%. Pretty much anything you buy at the bar will have a 15% charge added - even a can of Coke.

Each adult can bring 1 liter of liquor into Cayman duty-free. We usually buy liquor at the airport duty-free shop before we leave the US. There's no problem bringing it through Customs when we arrive on Grand Cayman, but it is a problem if you are traveling on to Brac or Little Cayman or another destination. You have to pack it carefully inside your checked luggage before you recheck it for the flight to Brac because you won't be able to take a large volume of liquid through Security at GCM. They sell re-usable soft containers for padding bottles in luggage on Amazon.

There is an ice machine near the bar at CBBR that is available for guest use, and you can buy canned sodas at the gift shop near the lobby or at the dive shop. There is a small grocery store near the Brac airport and you can borrow a free bicycle from the resort and head over there to buy mixers if you wish. Bring a bottle of water and a hat with you because it is a hot bike ride. The store is closed on Sundays.

Have fun and please post a report when you return!

@GrannyDiver, Just another comment, it's not a bad idea to add a day or two onto the start of your trip and spend a couple of days on Grand Cayman to relax and unwind. We are usually exhausted after finishing up work to leave our jobs, packing, and traveling and one of us (or both) tend to get head colds and ear infections if we race right out to dive when we are run down and tired - and that can really ruin a dive trip - we've learned that one the hard way!

The Comfort Suites on Grand Cayman is a good choice for a short stay. The property has access to a small section of Seven Mile Beach, daily breakfast is included, and you won't need a car because you can walk or cab to many nearby venues.

If you decide to just stay for a few hours I second My Bar at Sunset House. Good food, atmosphere and a short distance away. A few dollars taxi ride. True there is a free shuttle to GTYC, but for that much time the view, food etc at My Bar is better. If you have swimsuit in your carryon you can even have a quick dip. Plenty of showers as there are divers and snorkeled there constantly. Unless there are weather delays or similar events the new airport is greatly improved over the past few months. We are there every other week or so and the difference from even six months ago is like night and day.

Wow! Thank you all for such amazing and helpful suggestions. Your kindness and willingness to help demonstrates the awesomeness of the diving community. Special love to @KathyV; you are truly a skilled concierge!

My pleasure! BTW, you mentioned that you might take a "super early flight to Brac" if you decide to stay over on GC for a couple of days but that may not be the best idea. The check-in time at CBBR is 3 pm and your meal plan starts with dinner on the first night.

If they have the space at CBBR they will let you check in early, but usually they are checking folks out and turning over the rooms. You can also buy food at the bar or in the dining room if you get there early, or you can rent a car at the airport or the hotel to explore the island if you wish. There are a few fun places to eat like the Captain's Table. We usually rent a car for a day to get out and explore sometime during the week, often on the afternoon of our last full day - it's a small place. It's hard to get lost on Brac (much easier to lose your way on GC) but you might want to download Google Maps of the Caymans before you leave home to avoid roaming charges.

When we are staying on GC and then traveling to Brac or Little Cayman. We usually check out of our hotel in the morning and try to fly to the Sister Islands in the late morning or early afternoon. There are lots of places on GC to have a good breakfast, and breakfast is included if you stay at Comfort Suites - or Coconut Joe's right across the street from the CS is good spot for breakfast and lunch.

After breakfast we head to the airport to check in and get rid of our luggage. The Cayman Airways ticketing counter opens early so you shouldn't have any problem checking in and checking your luggage (remember to put any liquor or other liquids greater than 3 oz. in your checked luggage because you will have to go through Security at GCM - and they will take your bottle away from you!)

If it is a Saturday or Sunday we get rid of our rental car at the airport and then take the free shuttle to the GTYC to relax, have a drink, and eventually order lunch before heading back to the airport and an afternoon flight to Brac. The GTYC is open at 8:30 am on weekends. They open at 11 am on Weekdays but if you are too early you can take a cab to another nice option. I think the MyBar at Sunset House also doesn't open until 11 am - but if you do get over there the Red Conch Chowder is delicious!

When you get to Cayman Brac they will pick you up at the airport and transport you to the resort just a few minutes away. You will drive right by the small grocery and liquor stores that I mentioned. You can bike to these stores from the resort if desired but remember that the stores are closed on Sundays.

After you check-in at the front desk we usually walk down to the dive shop to check-in there, present our C Cards, and get our boat assignment. It can be very busy at the dive shop on the first morning of diving because they will be checking in all the late arrivals from the night before, so getting it done the day before works well for us. They will give each of you a numbered mesh bag and instruct you to put your gear in it and leave it outside your door early the next morning. They will pick it up and it will be set up and waiting for you on the boat after breakfast.

There is a small spa at the resort and I enjoy having a massage later in the week, but try to make reservations early because they start to fill up fast as the week progresses.

For your return trip from Brac be aware that for international carriers like United, Delta, American, the ticketing and check-in counters at GCM usually open about 2 hours before their first flight so it is not always great to get to the airport too early. However, they have recently installed kiosks at the airport so that you can check in automatically and check your bags. I haven't had the chance to use them yet but hopefully they will resolve the problem of early arrivals.

Last fall, our only return flight option from CB to GC was the early morning jet - so we got to the to the GCM airport super early and had to hang around waiting for the United counter to open. I would have been happy to use the kiosks if they had been available to get checked in and head out of the airport and over to the GTYC!

So many folks first arriving on GC need to go through customs and immigration, but you won't need to do that after your return flight from Brac - so don't let anyone herd you into the incoming lines, if any. Tell them that you just got off an interisland flight from Brac and have already been processed through I&C.

I hope that you have a great trip!
