GoPro Housing lens cover/protection from being thrown in camera tank on dive boat

Anyone have any ideas on this? I would like to protect the lens port on the housing before handing it off to the boat guy. I haven't seen any and I have looked. Would love some thoughts on this!

I use this one from Backscatter. It's neoprene and can get wet. I don't hand mine off to the boat guy. I enter and exit with it clipped off to a D-ring but put the cover on before putting it in rinse tank. If you prefer to hand off, you could take it into the water with you by clipping it to your tray or stowing in a pocket or something then putting it on at end of your safety stop.

I don't let the "boat guy" do anything with my housing but take it when I hand it up and return it to me on the dive deck. I usually just rinse it off and prep it for the next dives. It only sees a rinse tank once at the end of the trip.

I assume that you are handing the camera off to a crewmember when exiting the water? There are options- hold it firmly in your hand, with or without additional security of a wrist lanyard in case you let go. I don't use the wrist lanyard it's screwed up too many underwater shots and I've never dropped the camera.

Upon exiting the water my GoPro with tray, arms, and video lights is clipped in two places to my BCD shoulder D rings so both my hands are free to grab the ladder and my fins.

Yes Caruso--I typically hand off as I have a bad hip and dont want to worry about that too getting up on the ladder.Even if I did clip it to my BC I would most likely bang it against something.

Reefhound do you use this with your gopro attached to a tray? I like it, and as long as it will stay in place on the tray thats great!

As I said I don't take the cover into the water with me because I don't hand it off. But I don't see a problem with doing so as long as you stow it in a pocket or tie it off securely. It is neoprene and will float. My typical rig consists of a Gopro on a tray with two lights.

I also don't leave my rig in the camera bucket very long as I've seen more cameras flood in the bucket than underwater.

I've seen one GoPro with a tray and lights disappear from a camera bucket on a crowded boat. I won't leave mine unattended for that reason.

Great point and one I hadnt thought of. Im too trusting probably.My tray is rather large, I could prob come up with something to attach it to the tray (so it wont float in front of the lens) or my BC. By the time I get the lights on even bigger.

I'd probably just tie a couple of bungee loops around the bottom bar and stuff the cover into them.

Most of the boat crew I've ever dealt with have been very careful in handling customer's gear when handed to and fro.

The damage I have experienced with my GoPro actually occurred in the rinse tub, where other gear has rubbed against the expensive 67mm Magic Filter and left some scuff marks. Or some heavy handed diver just dumped their gear on top of others and wandered off for a coffee

I like the idea of an easily attached neoprene cover...
