Canon G7X Mark III - Initial Thoughts

The Canon G7X Mark III is set to be release in August 2019. At first glance, this camera seems to be an excellent, first-rate camera in a small body. Upgrades from the Mark II include a new stacked sensor and image processor, and much improved video capabilities.

Finding the lack of manual option in my TG-5 limiting this looks like a viable option for me. It would also make a great top side camera as I’m getting tired of lugging around a DSLR on vacations. It would be nice if Fantasea offered a port for a vacuum system. I will not purchase another Ikelite housing after my S100 housing, The buttons were way too crowded and the rods were not the proper length. Their other housings may be better but I don’t want to take that chance. So Nauticam is the next option but at twice the cost.

I'm probably a prime candidate; I have been shooting a Canon G15 in an Ikelite housing for several years; I would consider an upgrade but it will depend on finding the right mix of both the upgraded camera and a housing. I invested in two big Ikelite DS-161 strobes, and while I have the capability to fire them optically (bought for use with an Olympus TG5 rig), I prefer having a bulkhead for electrical/TTL on the Canon. FWIW my Ikelite housing has performed well.

Looks like I'm out of luck....as far as I can tell, there's no hotshoe or any other connection for a wired external strobe.

@BluewaterPhoto my big question is G5X II or G7XIII?? What is the real difference?
Do you expect the G5 to have to have an interchangeable port system, like the Sony RX100 M6? Or will the housing guys be able to make it work without?

So will the big comparisons be:
G5X II vs Sony RX100 M6 (or now the brand new M7!!!!!!!)
and
G7X III vs Sony RX100 M5A.

Looking forward to seeing some good comparison reviews from you guys and the other big photography websites.

The G5X II and G7XIII are very similar cameras. The main difference is the viewfinder. The G7XIII will also have more options when it comes to housings. Is there anything in particular you like about the g5x II?

the g5x ii has slightly longer zoom which will be handy especially with a macro lens. it will let you get even closer than the g7x iii. hopefully there will be more housings made for this model.

Only problem for the Canon G5X II and longer optical lens is the port length on any housing. Make it long enough to use 120mm and it may vignette at WA.

Fantasea's housing for the Sony RX100 VI limits that camera's 24-200mm lens to the 24-66mm range which is the most useful underwater. The recently announced Sony RX100 VII will likely do the same.

Nauticam and Ikelite make housings with large ports to accommodate the total focal range of the Sony RX100 VI and new RX100 VII but do have compromises. You can add various shorter limited range ports with 67mm threads for wide or macro options but in the end somethings gotta' give. It's all in what you intend to shoot.

My Canon G7X II at 100mm is fine and usable at 24mm wide end. I can add an "air lens" to get 24mm plus with 67mm threads even wider wet lens choices.

I think the G5X II will be a great travel camera for above water adding the Digic 8 processor and 4K no cropped video if you shoot still and video. Also the G5X II (and I think G7X III) now have PANORAMA modes

As to underwater we'll have to see if the G5X II is a good choice and only you can decide if so for your needs.

For the G5X m2 I'm hoping that Canon has managed to keep the lens throw to a minimum! If they have we could possibly get both WA & macro wet lens usage in a standard port type housing with the full zoom through.
But I fear this is just a dream.
But lets see what the housing guys come up with!

I got the G7x Mk 3 delivered on day one. It’s similar to the Mk2 with the addition of usb-c power (charging) and 4K 30fps video amongst other things. I contacted Fantasea and they say they are building a housing for it. As for the Mk 2 housing being used for the 3, it may be possible. The mk3 is slightly thicker... I’m going to try it at a shop tomorrow and lll post here and let you all know.

Update: Fantasea say the mk 2 housing doesn’t fit the mk3, but they are making one that should fit both. This will take a matter of “weeks”, so watch this space...
