Full Dive Shop Equipment. Price?

Hopefuly I catched the right part of this forum. I am not selling anything ;-)

The diveshop I am working right now is going to close end of this year. The owner will be retired.

He asked me if I like to buy all the equipment (only the equipment. Not the shop). He couldn't tell me any price yet.

It is a small shop and the equipment is around 5y old and most in a good condition.

In summertime when I do my parttime job as an instructor in my hometown I mostly rented the equipment for my students in a diveshop nearby for 50Euro each course. Not sure if I should buy this stuff and also no clue what this equipment worth in this amount.
Owning a big farm with enough space to store it and also the power for the compressor.
I am not willing to open a diveshop, but maybe I am gonna safe some money if I don't need to rent equip for the students. And I can rent it out to other divers

Asking for advice about price and what else I should check before I consider to buy. Any Ideas?

if you pay for the gear 1 piece price at a time you are over paying , figure out a percentage then that's the price , if your not getting the location and the name , something's up ........ive always said be a business person FIRST and an instructor second , too many shops have fallen to the "im an instructor now , I should own a shop " mentality

Dated gear is pretty much worthless, especially things like masks and snorkels.

Make it strictly a business decision. Unless the gear is cheaper than what you spend on renting over say a three period, it’s not worth it. Also, consider the impact if you still have to rent because you don’t have everything.

I would skip the compressor completely. Most dive shops loose money on fills. I wouldn’t take on the cost and upkeep. The compressor is a huge risk for little gain.

Do you do the maintenance on all of the gear now? If not, figure that in to the negative column because that will be an expense to be taken out of any saving on rental.

Location and name belongs to a hotel, that's why I wont get it. No idea what they r doing after that. And u r right it is easy to fail with a diveshop, that's why I just consider to buy so I don't need to pay the rental gear for my students... But the price have to be super low or it wont count

Jap the compressor is a pain. Also to transport it to my location and maintain it. Airfillings I can get almost for free in a diveshop.

Also the rest of the equipment doesn't worth that much. Just afraid to offend him when I offer a price

So far I did the service on it. For the regulators there are each two more service kits. Tanks need to get the inspection next year what also costs an amount of money.

Don’t waste your money. Used gear is worthless unless it’s a very good brand or in very good condition.

I´d ask myself how much of that gear will you really use / need?
If I understand correctly, you are not planning on owning a shop. So how often do you run courses and how many participants do you have? In order to staff 2-4 divers you wont need 20+ suits, tanks etc.
What might work is: getting all the gear for a really good price, sorting out the stuff you need and trying to resell the rest. But you have to do the numbers.

When doing the numbers for the compressor you should consider the aspect "freedom". So its not only the price of running the compressor vs. cost of fills but also the question, how convenient it is to get the fills when you need them, how long it takes to get to the shop and back, opening hours etc.

Any freedom gained by having a compressor will likely be offset by time spent doing maintenance and the cost of parts.
