Thanks Graeme and Zef. I'm considering taking the Divemaster course, but not sure in my current situation that it makes sense to pay Divemaster fees every year. More to think about . . .

PM me and I would be happy to discuss my thoughts on becoming a DM, my personal experience, and perhaps help you define the direction you wish to take.

Insurance is another cost to consider in your decision. As a pro you will need to carry liability insurance

All good advice. Contact PADI for exacts. Insurance is less if you just Assist with courses.

Note as well that insurance coverage and cost varies by country/region/continent.

For instance DAN professional liability insurance is different in the US than Europe, the coverage is different, the cost is different, the product name is different as well. And DAN professional liability insurance procured in the US for the US does not cover the dive professional outside the US.

So if you pick up insurance living in Texas but then score a job in Indonesia you will have to pay again for the correct insurance for where you will be working.

If this is true, it is a HUGE difference between the V&B product and the DAN product. I have the former, so can teach -- and be covered -- anywhere in the world, so far as I know. I do need to submit an "Additional Insured" statement for whatever boat/operator/resort I'm working from, and get that entity's permission to teach from their facilities.

Perhaps that is why PADI has chosen to partner/endorse V&B instead of DAN.
