I dunno, he used spit pretty much like I do. He was wiping it around a bit much, probably because he was filming I guess? I usually can go a good hour with a spit-defogged mask (however long my dive lasts, snorkel or scuba).

I also keep the snorkel in my mouth when snorkeling. It's just easier. Apnea/freediving may have its own rules, snorkeling is something most small children (3+) in my home state do without any training. It's not rocket surgery.

@dcvf2 you stated your points. Maybe now give it a rest. Dive/snorkel/freedive and let dive/snorkel/freedive. You ain't going to convert anybody. Particularly someone with a ton more experience than you - 0-25 dives, so probably not a huge amount of snorkeling experience either.

I've been snorkeling (not freediving) since I was 7. That's 64½ years. Way longer than I have been diving - and I've got a solo diver card and just past 300 dives - 183 solo. Not a lot but I've snorkeled a whole lot more. Pretty sure what I'm doing is safe. More chance of me breathing air at the surface without a snorkel in my mouth than with it in. Please do what you want, have at it. But arguing unendingly about this is just annoying.

@Kharon you point out something I missed, OP claims 0-24 dives and then there is this in @dcvf2 last post:

I began in snorkeling in 1965, but before, I red a good book…to know…
I’ve got 1* in scuba diving in November 1979. With the Belgian league Lifras
I’ve got my first * in free diving May 2003. With the Belgian league Lifras apnea commission

That's a long time scuba diving for just 0-24 dives something is not adding up here?

Most likely he didn't change the pulldown for number of dives and left it at the default setting.

To avoid misunderstood, I think I should have defined the different ways to go snorkeling.
And explain to which "snorkelers" the rules I'm talking about are meant

The 3 first here below aren’t concerned by "the apneist's rule »

1) surface snorkeler that never dive...of course ;-)

2) snorkeler that dive to 10 feet to make a picture.

3) snorkeler that dive to 30 feet to make a kind of "touch and go".

4) snorkelers that dives below 30 feet or more and stays at least 1 minute or more at this depth ... (who do "these mistakes" because they have not taken appropriate courses) !

I’m just thinking at this last category…that the comportment is nearly those of a free diver

From Esprise ME
« I don't know if there's a language barrier,..."

"Barrier of language", in the first sense of the term yes, of course
French from Belgium is my first language, Dutch is second, English is third.

« Shallow water blackout due to low PP02 just isn't something a snorkeler, as opposed to a freediver, has to worry about. »
OK only for the "snorkeler I defined as 4 above"

From Kharon
« You ain't going to convert anybody. «

That’s evident …

« Particularly someone with a ton more experience than you - 0-25 dives, so probably not a huge amount of snorkeling experience either. »

Experience !
38 year in snorkeling …type 4 during the 10 last year
16 year in free diving ( AIDA 3* since 2015…I was young in this time …73)
Not bad

Sorry to have bothered the scuba divers

That’s all folk ;-))

I'm another that has always kept my snorkel in my mouth. And I have tried to convert but after 50 years of doing it one way, well, I think I will stay with it.

And, I do know not to exhale on the way up due to SWBO. But I also dont push the limits, I am never looking to set a depth or time record and I have no interest in going "deep" just to go deep. I am very comfortable in free-diving in 40' and shallower, been deeper but, if I cant hang out, see stuff or "work" at depth, then way do it. Going down a line to "punch a ticket" holds no interest for me..

As I wrote in red at #7… after this severe warning in my throat between 65 and 78,8 feet, I took the good decision.
I was 62 …never to late...to old to do well !
By knowing the risks ....for "snorkeler type 4"

« And, I do know not to exhale on the way up due to SWBO. »
VERY WELL …how did you learn that?

« But I also don't push the limits, I am never looking to set a depth or time record and I have no interest in going "deep" just to go deep. »
You are a "wise" especially if you practice alone.
Same for me, except during the AIDA training :
- at the swim pool controlled by an Free diving instructor… « Static » max time 4min15s long time ago…recently 3min 30.
- in flooded stone quarry always controlled by an Free diving instructor…in CW max -24m (78,8 feet) to get My « 3 * »

« I am very comfortable in free-diving in 40' … »
It’s generally at that deep I film.
e.g. : Mantas in Raja Ampat Indonesia…at 7 min 35 (choose 1080p please)
Indonésie Kri n°1 2017

Same for me, but if you succeed it gives you more insurance …to film in my case
e.g. last year in red Sea :
- to film squids between 26 and 40 feet ( at 0 min 42) picture done by my wife as « Surface snorkeler »
- and at the end of the film, a « touch and go » at 60 feet filmed in real time at 3 min 04 (Shaab Marsa Alam) (choose 1080p please)
=> - and the assurance given by the training permits me to go thru a small cave (*) at (Zerib Kebir) at 3 min 59 filmed by my wife ( not in the cave !)
(*)We will return in one month

Good equipment : long fins, mask low volume:thumb:
Nice way to go to dive… when the sea isn't to far. Not possible in Belgium we must always take a plane.
Do you take pictures or film?
If yes can you show them us on this forum?

I have almost the same vehicle but not to dive ... to go out club sports

Last year, I rented on site a « Cannondale" to climb to an altitude of 6273 feet ... the "Mont Ventoux" located about 31 mile north of Marseille (southern France).

With pedals of course !

In the last bend before the top.

VERY WELL …how did you learn that?

Started snorkeling when I was about 8 and was certified SCUBA at 15 in 1976. I would read everything I could, long before their were courses. You ask, you read, your learn.

You are a "wise" especially if you practice alone.

I dont "practice" per se. I swim Masters 3 days a week, about 3200 meters per one hour work out. That is the "practice" that keeps me in shape to dive.

Do you take pictures or film?
If yes can you show them us on this forum?

On occasion I bring a gopro with me. Shot this video when this little guy sneaked up behind me. He got so close that I had to hand paddle away so as not to touch him. He hung with me for quite a while, this is the edited version.

You are the confirmation that swimmers become good free diver.

Nice video…mamatee well filmed at 2:29

The cousin of the manatee is the dugong, he only lives in salt water …here below at 0:28 and 3:39 , with my first video caméra (not HD only 720p) . Red sea retrospective from 2008 at Abu Dabbab
(The warning introduction is just to joke ignore it)

That's what I was thinking. I don't know anyone personally who can dive for a minute or more when snorkeling. IMO, that's freediving rather than snorkeling.
